Golf Tied for Ninth After First Day at GolfWeek Fall Challenge

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Conor McGrath picked up right where he left off shooting a four-under 68 in his first round of the 2022-23 season Sunday to lead Temple Golf at the 13-team GolfWeek Fall Challenge. McGrath sits tied for fourth among the 75-man field with the Owls tied for ninth overall at the three-day tournament held at the 6,926-yard par 72 True Blue Golf Course.
Scouting the Owls
> McGrath, who led Temple with a career-best 71.88 stroke average last season, started slow before making six birdies over a 10-hole stretch.  After a bogey on hole 11, he reeled off four straight birdies to close out his round.
> Graham Chase and Ethan Whitney each posted two-over 74s. Chase recovered from a four-over nine on hole four and closed his final 12 holes at two-under. Whitney had an up-and-down round, making a double-bogey on hole three before recording the Owls' lone eagle on the ninth hole. The two are tied for 45th overall. Â
> Joey Morganti made three birdies while shooting a three-over 75 to tie for 50th overall.Â
> Jake Naese, who made his collegiate debut, shot a five over 77 to tie for 65th. He had one birdy for his round, that coming on the par-five 15th.
>Playing as individuals, Andrew Curran and true freshman Darren Nolan each carded 75s to tie for 50th.
The Field
> Presbyterian leads the field with a 10-under 278. Delaware is three strokes back with a 281. Wright State and Jacksonville State are tied for third at 283. The Owls are 13 strokes off the pace at 291.
