Field Hockey to Open League Play at Home

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple field hockey team will open its BIG EAST schedule at home, hosting league opponent Quinnipiac Friday night before Big 5 rival La Salle Sunday afternoon. 

SCOUTING TEMPLE
> > The Owls are off to their best start in recent memory, going 5-1 through the first two weekends of play and outscoring its opponents 19-4. The team's 19 goals is just two shy of the total goals scored last season.
> Temple has scored 5+ goals in three games, scoring five goals in back-to-back games last weekend. 
> 11 Owls have scored so far, with Olivia Vaccari (3), Julianne Kopec, and Tess Muller (3) tying to lead the team.
> Molly Frey has been a force in goal, posting 14 of the team's 16 saves. She enters the weekend with a 0.778 save percentage to rank 17th in the NCAA and a 0.67 GAA to rank second. Her win-loss percentage (0.833) is sixth.

DEFENSE DOES IT
> The Owls have had a stellar defensive performance through the first three weeks, conceding just four goals through six games and recording three clean sheets.
> Temple conceded its first goal of the season to No. 12 Virginia, a 2021 NCAA Tournament team that has not been held to one goal in any other game.
> The Cherry and White is second in the NCAA in GAA (0.67), fourth in shutouts per game (0.75), 10th in save percentage (0.800), and 12th in the NCAA in defensive saves (2).
> Molly Frey is second in the nation in GAA (0.67), sixth in win-loss percent (0.833), and 18th in save percentage (0.778).

EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE
> The Owl offense has been on fire to start the season, scoring two-goals shy of last season's overall total (21) through the first six games.
> Three players are tied to lead the team with three goals each, while 11 Owls have scored at least once.
> The team has outscored its opponents 19-4, ranking 12th in the NCAA in goals per game (3.17).
> Temple is sixth in the nation in scoring margin (2.50), 10th in assists per game (3.17), 11th in scoring average (3.17) and points per game (9.5), and 15th in penalty corners per game (7.33).
> The Cherry and White has seen three games with 5+ goals, scoring five in back-to-back games last weekend.

SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
> Quinnipiac is 3-2 entering league play, falling 3-2 to LIU last Sunday.
> The Bobcats upset then-No. 22 Maine on the road on Sept. 4, earning a 1-0 victory.
> The team has outscored its opponents 9-7, with five Bobcats recording a goal. Quinnipiac is sixth in the nation in defensive saves (3) and is 10th in shutouts per game (0.40). 

SERIES HISTORY
> This will be the sixth meeting between the teams, with Quinnipiac holding a 3-2 series lead.
> The teams first met in 2016 when the Bobcats joined the BIG EAST from the MAAC.
> Four of the matchups have been decided by just one goal, with the two games going into extra minutes.
> Last season's meeting was a 3-2 shootout win for Temple on the road. 

SCOUTING LA SALLE
> La Salle is 3-3 entering the weekend and will host Lock Haven Friday afternoon to open its A-10 schedule.
> The Explorers won their home opener last weekend, snapping a three-game skid with a shutout over Rider.
> The team has scored in all but one game this season and has outscored its opponents 13-10 through the first three weekends of play.
> Tatum Johnson leads the team's scoring effort, recording five goals and three assists. In the cage, junior Ryan Curley has posted 27 saves for a 0.730 save percentage and a 1.67 GAA.

SERIES HISTORY
> This will be the 40th matchup between Temple and La Salle, with the Owls holding a dominant series lead of 34-4-1.
> The Cherry and White is on a six-game winning streak, last falling to the Explorers in 2010 at DeVincent Field.
> This will be the first meeting for the teams since the 2020-21 spring season, where La Salle fell 4-0 at Howarth Field in Temple's regular season finale.
