Football Opens Up Conference Play at Memphis

9.26.22 | Football

This Week
Temple travels to Memphis to open up conference play on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is set for 12pm and the game will air on ESPNU and 97.5 The Fanatic.

Last Week
The Cherry and White improved to 2-2 after they defeated the UMass Minutemen by a score of 28-0. The Temple defense continued to impress this game, shutting out UMass and forcing two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Last Time vs. Memphis
The last time the Owls took on the Memphis Tigers was last season when Temple won its conference opener, 34-31. After falling behind 17-0 early in the second quarter, the Owls rallied back, scoring 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to tie the game heading into the break. The Owls fell behind briefly in the third quarter, but a second half touchdown from Tayvon Ruley gave the Owls the lead, and a late touchdown from WR Amad Anderson Jr. sealed the game for Temple.

Last Time at Memphis
In 2020, Temple QB Anthony Russo passed for 387 and four touchdowns, three to WR Jadan Blue, but it was not enough as the Owls fell at Memphis, 41-29 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Russo set Temple school records for completions (41) and attempts (63) in leading the Owls to 500 total yards of offense. His 387 yards ranks eighth on the Owls' all-time list. However, he was intercepted three times in the contest. Blue set a career-high with his three touchdowns and tied his career-high with 13 catches. Randle Jones also set new highs with 12 catches for 118 yards, which he later broke with 170 yards at Akron in 2021. Re'Mahn Davis also had a big day, rushing 20 times for 113 yards. Temple led 15-10 at the half, but consecutive turnovers on its first two possessions of the second half led to 17 straight points by Memphis as the Tigers took a 27-15 lead they would never relinquish.

Temple-Memphis History
The Owls lead the all-time series 4-3, with Temple winning the most recent match-up last season. Neither team has won consecutively in the series history with each team alternating wins since their first meeting in 2013. The Tigers have won the last two meetings in Memphis, Tenn. in 2016 and 2020.

Up Next
The Owls will travel to Orlando, Fla. after a bye week for a mid-week match-up with the UCF Knights on Thursday, October 13 at 7pm on ESPN and 97.5 The Fanatic.
