Women’s Soccer Set to Host LIU in Final Nonconference Contest of Season

9.30.22 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (0-5-4, 0-2-0 AAC) is set to host LIU (3-6-2, 1-1-1 NEC) in their last nonconference contest of the year on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Temple Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The Owls
  • In the Owls second match of a four-game homestand, the Cherry and White dropped to Gonzaga, 4-1 in the programs first ever meeting with the Bulldogs.
  • Prior to Gonzaga, the Owls fell to No. 21 SMU at home on Sept. 22, 1-0, holding the Mustangs to just nine shots, the second least allowed by any opponent this season.
  • Before returning home, Temple dropped to Tulsa, 1-0 to open conference play and recorded back-to-back 0-0 draws against Drexel and Rider.
  • After an eight-save performance from Kyla Burns against Drexel, the standout keeper was named AAC Goalkeeper of the week for her efforts, her second conference award of the season after earning Weekly Honor Roll for posting a clean sheet against Penn on Aug. 26.
  • Roisin McGovern joins Emily Kavanaugh in the scoring column, with each student-athlete netting a goal apiece on the season. McGovern earned the 83rd minute tap-in in the Gonzaga game, while Kavanaugh netted a 63rd minute header against Maryland.
Scouting the Sharks
  • LIU enters the matchup with a 3-6-3 record (1-1-2 NEC), including a 1-4-1 road performance. The Sharks have found wins over Delaware State (2-0), Saint Peter's (1-0) and Stonehill (2-1).
  • The Sharks have five different student-athletes who have each netted two goals apiece this year in Jaylin Counts, Taylor Curcio, Navaeh Rascon, Maria Camila Orozco and Gina Proviano.  Counts leads the way in points, also adding three assists to her name, to lead the team with seven.
  • Kayla DeTreux has been the primary keeper for LIU, clocking 765 minutes in goal, grabbing 38 saves for a .745 save percentage.
  • Last year, LIU posted a 2-11-2 record, including a 2-7-1 conference showing. With a new season underway, the Sharks look to new leadership as Lucy Gillett takes the helm for her first season as head coach, after serving as an assistant on the staff in 2021. Gillett played professionally with Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace in England prior to returning to coaching.
