PHILADELPHIA - Throughout the first week of January, 10 student-athletes took part in the Culture & Sport in the New Republic of Barbados Immersion Course hosted by Temple's School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management.
This seven-day, three-credit course, led by Dr. Debra Blair of STHM and Prince Moody, Assoc. AD of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Student-Athlete Development, provided the student-athletes with a unique look at the ever-changing landscape of the sports world while also introducing them to West Indian Culture, with an emphasis on understanding the culture of the new Republic of Barbados. Dr. Marcia Oxley, a Temple alumna and student-athlete, also helped organize the trip and served as the main point of contact for the group upon arrival.
The student-athletes present represented four sports for Temple Athletics: football, field hockey, women's soccer, and women's track. The athletes included: Trey Blair, Kobe Wilson, Nienke Oerlemans, Sophia Gulotti, Jacoby Sharpe, Jimto Obidegwu, Kwesi Evans, Jordan Magee, and Jessica Wallace.
While traveling throughout the Republic, the group had a full itinerary that provided them with different insights about sport around the world. Some of their stops included the chance to visit the Barbados Community College for their cricket, road tennis, and netball experience, meet with Steven Leslie of the Barbados Cricket Assoc (BCA), talk with Kathy Harper-Hall of the Caribbean Netball Assoc. and Barbados Boxing Assoc., and learn from the in-house speaker for the Barbados Olympic Assoc., Roger Dyall.
"My favorite part of the trip was visiting Kensington Oval, which is the cricket stadium over there," said linebacker Jordan Magee. "Barbados is known for cricket so learning about the history and how it was adopted from England was cool. They allowed us to walk around on the field and meet a couple of the cricket athletes too."
The course was designed for the student-athletes to understand sport organization structures representing Barbados, the impact of sport on the governance and economy of Barbados, and the relationship between sports, recreation, leisure, and the evolution of the culture/country.
The course allowed the student athletes to be immersed in the culture, while also being responsible for assignments before, during, and after the trip was complete. A pre-trip destination essay, social-media takeover, and participation in classes while in Barbados were some of the requirements.
"What the student-athletes got out of it was the cultural experience and the cultural exchange. Even more so, they got an appreciation for their own culture as well," Moody said. "They got the chance to step out of their comfort zone. Before the trip, they were nervous but by the end, everyone was friends. Watching them come together as a group was amazing."
