Comeback Effort Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Falls to Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Temple Women's Basketball team fell on the road to the Memphis Tigers, 64-53. Caranda Perea set a career-high in rebounds with eight, this follows her setting a season-high points (11) two games ago against East Carolina.
Hannah Riddick put up a double-double for the Tigers with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She was one of three Memphis players in double-figures.
First Quarter: Temple 15, Memphis 13
> The Owls started the game off with vicious defense, holding Memphis to 1-10 shooting in the first five minutes to take an early 8-4 lead.
> Gary hit her second three of the half to put TU up seven (15-8). Memphis scored the last five of the quarter to cut the lead down to two.
> Gary led all scorers at the end of the first with eight points. The shooting guard connected on 2-3 from deep.
Second Quarter: Temple 26, Memphis 28
> The second quarter began as a defensive struggle. The two sides combined for 4-17 from the field in the first five minutes. Caranda Perea scored the lone basket for the Cherry and White during this period.
> The contest picked up as the second wound down. Temple ripped off six straight to jump out to a 24-20 lead. Memphis countered with a 6-0 run of its own to go up by two (26-24).
> The final minute of the half saw offsetting technical fouls issued to each team. Memphis hit a buzzer beater to take a two-point advantage into halftime.
> Perea played well in the second frame, scoring five and grabbing three rebounds.
Third Quarter: Temple 33, Memphis 45
> Aleah Nelson opened the third with two made free throws to tie it up at 28. Memphis scored the next seven points (35-28, Memphis).
> Temple scored the next three following a Memphis technical foul. The Tigers found the bucket for the next nine points.
> Nelson and Perea grabbed four rebounds each in the period.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 53, Memphis 64
> Memphis controlled the early portion of the fourth quarter. Beginning the period on a 12-4 run (57-35, Memphis).
> Temple rallied for a late comeback trimming the lead down to 10 points with two minutes remaining but the Owls could not get the lead down to single-digits. The Owls fell 64-53.
Game Notes
> Perea had another strong performance, pulling down a career-best eight boards. This is her third straight game with at least five rebounds.
> Gary scored in double figures for the second straight game. This is the first time she has crossed the 10 point marker in back-to-back games since early December.
> The Owls pitched one of their best defensive performances of the season, holding Memphis to just 33.9 percent from the field.
