PHILADELPHIA – Jacqueline Cotumaccio, who has worked as a registered dietitian in the performance nutrition department at the University of Delaware, has been named the first full-time sports nutritionist for Temple Athletics, announced Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director Jessica Reo.
"We are excited to announce the hiring of Jacqueline Cotumaccio as our first full-time sports nutritionist," said Reo. "We have been constantly growing our health and fitness area to fully support our 500-plus student-athletes and the addition of a full-time sports nutritionist is a much-needed position. Jacqueline has worked with student-athletes in the sports nutrition realm since her days as an undergraduate at Delaware and is the right fit to grow that area with our 19 varsity sports teams."
"I am grateful for the opportunity to give student-athletes a new resource and understanding the importance of nutrition both on and off the field," said Cotumaccio. I want to thank Arthur Johnson, Jessica Reo and Kevin Addison for trusting in my ability to take on this role and everyone who has played a role in sculpting me into the best dietitian I can be."
A 2020 graduate from the University of Delaware where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, Cotumaccio worked first with Blue Hen student athletes as a sports nutrition student manager during her senior year and later as a volunteer registered dietitian since October 2021. Her duties in this role at Temple include individualized nutrition counseling sessions for athletes, nutrition team talks, consulting individual student-athletes' weights for hydration status for proper recovery/prevention of injury, set up/supervision of fueling station, providing plate coaching to injured or ill athletes to support recovery, working directly with sports medicine, strength and conditioning and our coaching staff to monitor student-athletes and their health.
Cotumaccio has also served the last year as a registered dietitian for MS Nutritional Wellness in Manhasset, N.Y. There she educated and counseled 30-40 patients a week on appropriate treatment options while implementing medical nutrition therapy to cover a wide range of clientele such as disordered eating, anemia, RED-S, sports nutrition, amenorrhea, gastrointestinal concerns, food allergies and intolerances, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and weight maintenance.
"Everyone in our program and every other coaching staff I've spoken with is really excited to welcome Ms. Cotumaccio to the Owl family," said Temple women's soccer head coach Nick Bochette. "Her experience and expertise will allow us to further strengthen our ability to support our student athletes in their quest for excellence. The more we continue to learn about the nutritional needs, patterns, and best practices of elite-level athletics, the more important this area of focus becomes. I know our team is eager to work with Jackie, and I am certain that she will have a profoundly positive impact on the student athlete population here at Temple."
