Gymnastics Finishes Third at Keystone Classic to Open 2023 Season

1.6.23 | Women's Gymnastics

PITTSBURGH – The Temple gymnastics team opened up the 2023 season at the Keystone Classic, hosted by the University of Pittsburgh on Friday night as it came away with a third-place score of 194.225, behind Pitt (195.950) and No. 35 Penn State (195.475). Penn finished in fourth on the opening night of the season as they scored a 193.525.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On the night, the Cherry and White had three gymnasts finish within the top five of their respective events.
  • Sophomore Sarah Stallings earned the Owls' only event win (bars), while teammate Cyrena Whalen tied for second place on the same apparatus, meanwhile Hannah Stallings tied for fourth on the beam.
  • The Owls were ahead after the second rotation, when they scored a meet-high 49.150 on the beam, but were unable to sustain those marks on the floor and vault to close out the meet.

Bars (Rotation 1 – 48.900)
  • In her event first event victory of the season, Sarah Stallings' 9.850 marked the seventh time in her career she's notched a 9.8 or better.
  • The junior Whalen earned her sixth career 9.8 or better, her first since 2021, as she scored a 9.825.
  • Hannah Stallings (9.775), Madison Dorunda (9.725), Madisson Elmore (9.725), and Madison Brooks (9.650) rounded out the bars' team scores.

Beam (Rotation 2 – 49.150)
  • With the 49.150, Temple went ahead of the three other Pennsylvania schools, totaling a 98.050.
  • Four of the six Temple gymnasts scored a 9.8 or better on the apparatus, led by sophomore Hannah Stallings' 9.875, marking the eighth time in her career to achieve a 9.8 or better score.
  • Renee Schugman added her seventh career 9.8 of her career (9.850). Julianna Roland and Brooke Donabedian had matching 9.825s, marking the 13th time in both of their Temple careers to achieve a 9.8 or better.
  • Sophomores Sarah Stallings and Madison Dorunda added 9.7s with a 9.775 and 9.725, respectively.

Floor (Rotation 3 – 47.900)
  • Sophomore Summer Ruskey led Temple on the floor with a career-high 9.825.
  • The junior Donabedian was the only other Owl to eclipse the 9.7 mark as she scored a 9.750.

Vault (Rotation 4 – 48.275)
Head Coach Josh Nilson about his team's performance
"We had a lot of great performances tonight. Bars and beam hit very well to lead the meet off. Bars was less than a tenth behind the top score from any team tonight, and beam was the highest scoring of any team tonight. We lead the meet going into the third event- but we got a little uncharacteristically tight on floor and vault. We will improve and be ready for our meet at UNH on Sunday!"

Up Next
Temple returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 15 as they travel to Durham, N.H. for a tri-meet against Central Michigan and the host UNH. The meet is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
