Football Falls to UTSA, 49-34

PHILADELPHIA — Temple (2-4, 0-2 AAC) lost to the UTSA Roadrunners (2-3, 1-0 AAC), 49-34, on homecoming at Lincoln Financial Field Saturday afternoon. QB E.J. Warner threw for 472 yards and five touchdowns, connecting with WR John Adams (127), TE David Martin-Robinson (112) and RB Darvon Hubbard (95) for big receiving performances. Warner's passing performance, his third career 400-yard passing game, set a new Temple program record for most career 400-yard passing games.

How It Happened

  • The Owls started off the game strong on the opening drive, with QB E.J. Warner passing for 56 yards. Warner threw for four third-down conversions, three of which went to Hubbard. Temple finished the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Warner to Martin-Robinson to give the Owls a 7-0 lead with 8:17 remaining in the first quarter.
  • On the fourth drive of the game, UTSA evened the game at 7-7 on a 14-yard rushing touchdown by RB Kevorian Barnes with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter.
  • With 2:10 remaining in the first quarter, Warner completed to Martin-Robinson for a 33-yard touchdown to give the Owls a 14-7 lead. 
  • The Roadrunners tied the game at 14-14 with 13:18 remaining in the first half off a 17-yard touchdown pass from QB Frank Harris to WR Joshua Cephus.
  • UTSA took a 21-14 lead off a one-yard rushing touchdown from Harris with 10:04 remaining in the second quarter.
  • WIth 6:14 remaining in the first half, the Owls successfully ran a trick play that resulted in a 31-yard touchdown from Warner to Adams to tie the game at 21-21.
  • With 3:00 remaining in the first half, the Roadrunners scored on a six-yard rushing touchdown by RB Robert Henry.
  • UTSA extended its lead to 35-21 with 12:32 remaining in the third quarter, off a 40-yard passing touchdown from Harris to WR Tykee Ogle-Kellogg.
  • TE Peter Clarke caught a two-yard touchdown on fourth down with 10:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Owls failed to convert the two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 35-27.
  • The Roadrunners extended their lead to 42-27 with 9:14 remaining in the game, as Henry rushed for a 43-yard touchdown.
  • WIth 6:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, Warner connected with TE Jordan Smith for a 13-yard touchdown pass to trim UTSA's lead to 42-34.
  • The Roadrunners extended the lead to 48-34 with 6:29 remaining in the game, as Harris connected with WR Devin McCuin for a 29-yard touchdown. 
  • The Owls pushed the ball down to the Roadrunners' nine yard line with 2:42 remaining in the game, but turned the ball over on downs. UTSA held on to win 49-34.

Notes

  • Warner's 472 passing yards marked his fourth career 300-yard game and third career 400-yard game. He now owns the Temple program record for most 400-yard passing games.
  • CB Daiyaan Hawkins recorded his first career start and first career tackle.

Statistically Speaking

  • Warner's five passing touchdowns tied a career high for passing touchdowns in a game, making him the only Temple player to record two career five-touchdown games. He also set a program record for pass attempts in a game, with 65.
  • Martin-Robinson's two-touchdown performance is a career high for touchdowns in a game.
  • Adams set new career highs for receiving yards (127), rushing yards (16), and receptions (10) in a single game.
  • Hubbard set new career highs for receiving yards (95) and receptions (8).
  • Temple's tight ends combined for 190 receiving yards on the day.
  • LB Jordan Magee tallied 10 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
  • SAF Tywan Francis tied a career high with nine tackles and finished the day with 10 total tackles.
