Women’s Basketball Set for 50th Meeting Between Temple and Villanova

PHILADELPHIA – Big 5 play opens this Sunday for the Temple Owls (2-2) and Villanova Wildcats (1-1) as the two women's basketball programs meet on the hardwood for the 50th straight season. Villanova is the 5th most played opponent in Temple women's basketball history the second most played opponent the Owls have never shared a conference with behind only Penn. The game will tip-off at 2 p.m. at Villanova's Finneran Pavilion. The game will stream on FloSports and the Varsity Network App.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 63 @ #23 Ole Miss 80
> Temple continued its up and down season thus far, falling to No. 23 Ole Miss 80-63 in Oxford.
> The Rebels were leading by double digits by the time the first quarter came to a close and never relinquished the lead. The Owls made several rallies in the second half, including a 10-0 run in the third quarter, but could not break through.
> Tiarra East reach a new season-high for any Temple player, with 24 points including 9-9 from the free throw line. Demi Washington scored the second most points of her career, finding the bottom of the basket for 14.

THE OWLS
> Led by the efforts of freshman Tristen Taylor with 11 steals (24th nationally/2nd AAC), Temple ranks third in the American in steals per game and second in turnover margin, with 11.5 and +9.5, respectively.
> Following her performance at Ole Miss, East leads Temple in scoring with 12.0 points per contest. A different Owl has led the Cherry & White in scoring after each game this season (Molina, Gary, Piper, and East).
> Ines Piper leads the Owls on the glass, pulling down 6.8 rebounds per game, 12th in the American. She was named to her first Big 5 Honor Roll last Monday.
> Aleah Nelson is tied for eighth in the conference in assists per game (3.75 apg). The three-time All-Conference guard is chasing 1500 points and 500 assists. She will be the 3rd player in program history to hit the mark.

SCOUTING VILLANOVA
> Last year, the Wildcats had one of its best seasons in program history. Villanova amassed 30 wins, its most ever. The team advanced to the Sweet 16 for only the second time.
> The Wildcats are 1-1 so far in 2023-24, defeating Portland, 64-42, and falling to Oregon State, 63-56 on a west coast road trip last weekend. It will have been a full week since Villanova has last been on the court.
> With All-American Maddie Siegrist graduating on the WNBA, Lucy Olsen is a name to watch. The preseason All-BIG EAST guard averaged 12.4 points, 4.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game last season. She is averaging 22.0 points per game in two games this year.
> Denise Dillon is in her 21st season as a head coach and fourth on the Main Line. Before taking over at Villanova, she was the head coach at Philly rival Drexel. Dillon is 401-235 overall and 72-24 at Villanova.

 SERIES HISTORY
> This will be the 50th annual edition of Temple vs Villanova women's basketball. The two have met every single season since 1973.
> The two sides met last season at Temple, with the No. 24 Wildcats coming out on top, 74-71 in what might have been the Big 5 game of the year. 2023 WNBA draft 3rd overall pick Siegrist scored a Liacouras Center women's basketball building record with 42 points. Temple's Tarriyonna Gary scored a career-high 23 points, 21 of which came on seven three's, tied for the thurd most in program history.
> The series has been even recently, with the two sides trading punches. Neither program has won three straight matchups since Villanova won in 2012-14.
