11.4.23 | Football

PHILADELPHIA — Temple (3-6, 1-4) defeated Navy (3-5, 2-3) 32-18 at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday, November 4. QB. E.J. Warner made an emphatic return for Temple, recording his fourth 400-yard passing game of his career. WR Zae Baines had a career day, hauling in 132 receiving yards. The Owls' defense held Navy to 268 total yards on the day.

How It Happened

  • The Owls won the coin toss and started the game in a rhythm on offense. QB E.J. Warner went 6-6 with 59 passing yards, ending the drive with a 22-yard touchdown completion to TE Jordan Smith that gave the Owls a 7-0 lead with 11:23 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Temple took a 10-0 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter following a 42-yard field goal from K Camden Price. The drive lasted eight plays for 45 yards.
  • Warner connected with TE David Martin-Robinson on a 24-yard touchdown pass to take a 17-0 lead with 14:46 remaining in the second quarter.
  • In the first half, Temple's defense forced punts on all five of Navy's drives. The Owls held the Midshipmen to 63 total yards and took a 17-0 lead into halftime. The halftime opponent yardage total is the lowest the Owls have allowed in the first half since Week 2 of the 2022 season against Lafayette (39 yards).
  • The Midshipmen scored their first points of the game with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter, as QB Xavier Arline connected with RB Eli Heidenreich for a 24-yard touchdown completion. Navy converted the two-point conversion to cut Temple's lead to 17-8.
  • Navy's Arline's 2-yard rush into the endzone trimmed Temple's lead to 17-15 with 14:56 left in the game.
  • With 9:09 remaining in the game, Warner connected with Smith for a 13-yard touchdown reception to give the Owls a 24-15 advantage.
  • The Midshipmen brought the game within one possession with 5:46 left in the game after a 45-yard field goal from Nathan Kirkwood, slitting Temple's lead to 24-18.
  • The Owls added to their lead following Warner's 16-yard touchdown pass to WR Dante Wright with 3:29 remaining in the game. Temple took a 32-18 lead after Warner connected to Wright for a successful two-point conversion.
  • The Owls' defense stopped Navy on a fourth-down attempt at the Temple 12-yard line with 1:38 remaining in the game to secure the victory.

Statistically Speaking

  • WR Zae Baines set new career highs with seven receptions and 132 receiving yards. Baines' 132 receiving yards are the most receiving yards in a game by any Temple player this season.
  • LB Jordan Magee set career highs in solo tackles (8) and tackles for loss (4.5).
  • DL Jerquavion Mahone set a new career high in tackles, with eight.
  • Temple's win over Navy marked the second time this season that the team's tight ends accounted for three or more touchdowns in a game.
  • QB E.J. Warner set a new career high for completion percentage in a game, completing 82% of his passes. Warner's four career 400-yard passing games are the most by any Temple quarterback in program history.

  • DE Tra Thomas recorded his first sack of the season midway through the second quarter.
  • 2022 All-Pro selection Hassan Reddick (2013-16) was in attendance as an honorary captain for the Cherry & White.
  • The Owls' 17-0 lead at halftime marked the first time that Temple held an opponent scoreless in the first half since Week 9 of the 2019 season against USF. Temple's halftime advantage was the team's largest lead at the half since holding a 35-9 lead over Bucknell during the opening game of the 2019 season.
