Opening Tip
The Temple University men's basketball team plays its second game of the Diamond Head Classic as it faces off against the Old Dominion Monarchs on Friday, December 22. Tipoff from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.

Last Time Out - Men's Basketball Battles Nevada
The Owls team placed three players in double figure scoring, but Temple was upended 80-56 by the Nevada Wolfpack in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Thursday morning.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hysier Miller led the Owls with 18 in the game. He connected on four threes and added five rebounds and two assists.
  • Jahlil White scored 13, hitting 9-of-12 at the line.
  • Steve Settle III delivered 11 in the contest with a block and a steal. Sam Hofman netted six with five rebounds.

Lining It Up
Jahlil White set new season-highs for the Owls by making nine free throws and stepping to the stripe 12 times against the Wolfpack. Getting to the line is nothing new for White who was also the last TU player to hit 10 free throws in a game, accomplishing the feat against Tulane on March 5, 2023. Thusfar this year he is shooting a personal best 75.9 percent at the charity stripe.

Get Ahead Early
Following the game against Nevada, Temple is 6-0 when leading at the half and 0-5 when trailing at intermission.

Scouting Report
Old Dominion is 3-7 on the season and is coming off a 111-87 loss against TCU on Thursday in its first game of the classic. The Monarchs were selected third in the Sun Belt preseason poll.

Leading the offense for ODU are Vasean Allette and Chaunce Jenkins at 15.7 and 15.6 points per game, respectively. Allette jumped more than a point in his average, tallying 25 against TCU. The pair is joined in double figures by Tyrone Williams at 12.1 an outing. Williams tops the team with 6.2 rebounds per game and Jenkins has 27 assists on the year.

One thing Old Dominion has done relatively well is take care of the ball, ranking in the top-75 in NCAA Division I in turnovers per game at 11.3. They also can get out on the run, sitting in the top-60 with 13.89 fastbreak points per game.

Beyond the top trio, offense has been hard to come by for the Monarchs. Coming into the tournament they were in the bottom 20 percent nationally in scoring offense. They also haven't distributed the ball particularly well, sitting in the bottom-20 at just 10.5 assists a contest. Getting to the line has also been an issue, ranking in the bottom-25 in both free throw attempts and makes per game.

Veteran collegiate mentor Jeff Jones is in his 11th season at the helm of ODU and has a 203-142 record leading the Monarchs. In 32 seasons as a head coach, he has amassed 560 wins, taken his teams to the NCAA tournament eight times, including an Elite Eight run with Virginia in 1995 and has guided his teams to 12 seasons of 20 or more wins with a high-water mark of 27 in 2014-15.

All-Time Series
Friday is the second meeting between Temple and Old Dominion with the Owls holding a 1-0 series lead.

Last Time Against The Monarchs
Shizz Alston, Jr. and Quinton Rose each topped the 20-point mark as the Owls topped Old Dominion 76-65 on November 16, 2017 in the first game of the Charleston Classic in Charleston S.C.

Friend Of A Friend
TU and ODU have one opponent in common this season as both schools have defeated Drexel this year. The Owls topped the Dragons 66-64 in a road contest on November 14 while the Monarchs needed overtime to top DU at home, 68-61 on November 26.

Going To The Line For Three
Often times a player getting fouled in the act of shooting a three-pointer is a couple of times a season occurrence. TU has made all but made it a part of the offense this season with seven such opportunities in 11 games. Matteo Picarelli has been the beneficiary six times and Hysier Miller once. Temple has made 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) of its free throws when fouled on a trey.

Welcome Back
In his first game back in five contests it was like Jahlil White never left, as he posted his third double-double of the season against VCU. Despite playing just five games, White's three double-doubles are the third most in the conference, trailing only Brandon Johnson of East Carolina and Igor Milicic, Jr. of Charlotte. He is currently averaging 7.8 rebounds a game which would be seventh in the AAC if he had enough games to qualify.

A Rare Feat
With his back-to-back AAC Freshman of the Week honors on December 4 and 11, Zion Stanford became just the second player in program history to win consecutive weekly awards from the American Athletic Conference. Jahlil White was the Freshman of the Week two weeks in a row on January 10 and 17, 2022.

20/20/20/20 Vision
December 10 against UAlbany was the fourth 20-point game of Hysier Miller's career. He had two combined coming into the season.

Half A Dozen
We mentioned earlier that Temple has placed five players with 10 or more points in a game four times this year, but December 6 against Bloomsburg was the second time this season the Owls placed six players in double figure scoring. TU also accomplished the feat against La Salle. They are the first such games since February 7, 2018 when Quinton Rose (23), Josh Brown (17), Shizz Alston, Jr. (14), J.P. Moorman II (11), Ernest Aflakpui (10) and Nate Pierre-Louis (10) all tallied 10 or more in a 90-73 win against East Carolina.

Putting In Extra Work
By going to triple overtime, the game against La Salle on November 29 entered some rare territory. It was the first 3OT game for the Owls since an 83-82 win at Massachusetts on February 11, 1990. The game was also just the fifth triple overtime game in Big 5 history and the first since La Salle downed Villanova, 84-83 on December 20, 1980.

Up Next
The Owls wrap their stay in the Aloha State on Saturday, December 24 when they take on either UMass or Portland. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 or 3:30 p.m. EST.
