PHILADELPHIA – Senior Associate Athletic Director of Strategic Communications, Larry Dougherty has been named the 2023 Arch Ward Award recipient from the College of Sport Communicators (CSC).
The Arch Ward Award is presented to a current College Sport Communicator member who has made outstanding contributions to the field of college athletics communications, and who by his or her activities, has brought dignity and prestige to the profession, which is then voted on by the Special Awards Committee.
"I am truly honored to be named the recipient of this prestigious award," said Dougherty. "Looking at the list of previous recipients, which includes my mentor and Temple legend Al Shrier, is humbling as these individuals are the best in our profession. I want to thank all the staff members that have worked with me, as well as the Athletic Directors who have provided great support throughout my career. Without these amazing colleagues this would not have been possible."
In Dougherty's 38-year athletic communications career, he has been extremely active in both the CSC and the Philadelphia community. Formerly known as CoSIDA, Dougherty served as the organization's president in 2010-11, while also being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. He has been a recipient of multiple awards including the ECAC-SIDA Irving T. Marsh Award (2011), the ECAC-SIDA Pete Nevins Award (2017), and the Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award (2017). At a local level, Dougherty created the Philly-SIDA organization to recognize Philadelphia-area student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom.
Dougherty is in his 20th year at Temple and 12th as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications after serving the previous four years as Associate Athletic Director. In his position, Dougherty oversees the strategic communications of the University's 19-sport Division I-A athletic programs.
He joined the Owls' staff after serving 15 years in the media relations office at Saint Joseph's, the last eight as the school's assistant athletic director for media relations. Prior to SJU, he served as the SID at Nicholls State for one year and as the information director of the East Coast Conference for two years.
Dougherty becomes the 65th individual to receive this award, and the second Temple Owl, behind Shrier, who was granted the award in 2010.In the 65 years of the award, there have only been nine other universities who have had two staff members earn the award.
