Women’s Basketball Falls at Wichita State

WICHITA, KS – The Temple women's basketball team (10-17, 5-10 AAC) dropped on the road to Wichita State (16-12, 6-9 AAC), 79-67. With the loss, Temple falls to ninth in the American Athletic Conference.
Four Owls scored in double figures, Aleah Nelson (16), Tarriyonna Gary (15), Caranda Perea (14), and Brittany Garner (10). Jane Asinde and Curtessia Dean scored 22 each for Wichita State.
First Quarter: Temple 11, WSU 20
> Ines Piper picked up two fouls in the first minute, shortening Temple's lineup early.
> Perea scored the first bucket of the game for the Owls in her return to play after being injured early last game against UCF. Wichita State got out to an early 12-4 lead.
> The Owls' shots began to fall in the back half of the first, but the Shockers stayed hot, extending the lead to nine at the end of the quarter.
> Perea led Temple with six points at the end of the frame.
Second Quarter: Temple 34, WSU 33
> Temple stormed back early in the second with back-to-back threes from Aleah Nelson. The Shockers knocked down a pair of free throws before Gary joined in with a three of her own to cut the lead to 26-22 going into the media timeout.
> The Cherry & White tied the game up at 26 all on a Perea jumper with 3:36 left in the contest.
> Wichita State scored seven straight to get out a 33-26 lead. Temple counter punched with an 8-0 run in the last 1:28 of the half to take a one point lead. Each of the last three baskets were off forced turnovers by the Owls.
> Perea had the best scoring half of her career with 14 points.
Third Quarter: Temple 59, WSU 63
> Temple came out aggressive in the third quarter, growing the lead to six points (44-38, TU) with points from Gary and Tiarra East.
> Wichita State re-tied the game at 4:27 at 51-51.
> The Shockers controlled the final two minutes of the third, taking a lead of 63-59.
> Gary scored 10 of Temple's 25 points. The Owls as a whole shot 8-11 from the field.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 67, WSU 79
> The game grounded to halt at the beginning of the fourth, each team only scored two points in the first four minutes of the period (65-61, WSU).
> The Shockers hit a pair of three pointers to extend the lead to eight, its largest since the second quarter. Garner hit a post bucket to trim the deficit down to six going into the media timeout (71-65, WSU).
> Wichita State scored eight of the last ten points to secure the win.
