Women’s Basketball Closes Out Regular Season with SMU

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (10-17, 5-10 AAC) returns to Liacouras Center Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a bout with the SMU Mustangs (16-10, 7-7 AAC). It is senior day for Temple, the lone Owl being honor is forward Brittany Garner. The game will stream on ESPN+, tickets are available to purchase at Owlstix.com

> Senior day: Garner will be honored with in a ceremony 20 minutes prior to tip-off.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 67 @ Wichita State 79
> Temple fell to Wichita State on the road.
> The contest was closely contested for nearly the entire game. Wichita State did not hold a lead of over 10 points until two minutes remaining.
> Shooting guard Tarriyonna Gary headlined for the Owls, scoring 15 points while hitting 3-6 from deep.

THE OWLS
> Aleah Nelson sits at sixth in the American in scoring (15.6 ppg) and third in assists (4.4 apg). She has scored in double-figures in each of the last ten games. Her nine assists last game are a season-high for any Owl in 2022-23.
> Tiarra East ranks second on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and leads the Owls in rebounding (5.9 rpg). The wing ranks top 20 in both points and rebounding in the American. She ranks fourth in the league in free throw shooting (.827).
> Forward Caranda Perea continued her impressive recent stretch of games. In the month of February, she averaged 11.3 ppg and 7.5 rpg in the best month of her career.
> Gary has rebounded after a tough stretch of games. She has scored in double-figures in three straight contests. In her last three games she is averaged 12.6 ppg and 6.3 rpg. She leads in the team in rebounds in the last three outings.

SCOUTING SMU
> SMU returned to the WNIT last season after four straight seasons without a postseason berth. It was the Mustangs first season with new head coach Toyelle Wilson at the helm.
> This season, SMU will claim its first winning campaign since 2013-14. The Mustangs have impressed with close losses to ranked foes Baylor, and USF, and a win over Cal.
> SMU has two of the better post players in the American in Chantae Embry and Savannah Wilkinson. Embry is second on the squad in both points (12.4 ppg) and rebounds (6.3 rpg). Wilkinson is putting up 11.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.
> Wilson is in her second season leading the SMU program. She previously spent three seasons as the head coach of Prairie View A&M, leading the Panthers to three straight SWAC championships from 2010-13. She spent the last few seasons as an assistant at Baylor and Michigan. Wilson is 85-68 in her career and 30-25 in Dallas.

 SERIES HISTORY
> Temple and SMU have played each other every season since Temple joined the AAC in 2013.
> TU is 9-6 against the Mustangs. The Owls have never lost more than two games in a row.
> Last season, the two sides met in three straight games to conclude the season. SMU won 2 of the 3 including the final battle in the AAC tournament.
