Strong Fourth Quarter Pushes ECU Past Temple

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Temple women's basketball team (10-13, 5-6 AAC) fell to East Carolina (16-8, 7-4 AAC) for the second time this season, 67-52. The Owls held the lead through three quarters of the play, but a massive fourth quarter by the Pirates gave ECU the victory.
Brittany Garner impressed for the Owls. The forward scored eight points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. East Carolina's Amiya Joyner led all scorers in both points and rebounds, with 23 and 13, respectively.
First Quarter: Temple 10, East Carolina 10
> The contest tipped off evenly, with two sides feeling each other out. East Carolina held a slim lead of 8-6 at the first media timeout. Caranda Perea stood out in the early goings with four rebounds in the first five minutes.
> The final five minutes of the period was an absolute defensive showcase from the Owls. ECU scored only once, while Makayla Waleed scored four points for Temple (10-10, TU).
> Waleed led Temple with four. Perea paced all players with five rebounds.
Second Quarter: Temple 22, East Carolina 24
> Tiarra East scored the first five points for TU to give the Owls the lead three minutes into the second (15-13, TU). The Pirates got the next six to go into the media timeout with a 19-15 advantage.
> ECU sunk a bucket from the post to stretch the lead to six, Aleah Nelson countered with a triple (21-18, TU). Neither squad scored for over the next two minutes of game time.
> The Pirates capitalized on an and-one, while Denise Solis sunk a free throw. Solis missed the second, but Ines Piper grabbed the board and kicked it out to Nelson who drilled a three as time expired in the first half.
> Nelson had six to tie for the game-high in the first half. Perea led all players by a wide margin with seven rebounds.
Third Quarter: Temple 45, East Carolina 42
> After an initial few minutes trading baskets. The Pirates built an early lead, 30-26. Three straight points from Brittany Garner including a second chance layup helped tie things up at 30. It was the first of seven straight points by the forward (38-35, ECU).
> Nelson bombed in a three pointer to the retie the match at 38.
> ECU regained the lead at 42-39, but three straight points from Tiarra East tied it back up. Points from Waleed and Denise Solis gave the Owls a 45-42 advantage going into the fourth.
> Garner absolutely dominated the quarter with eight points and seven rebounds.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 52, East Carolina 67
> The Pirates jumped out to a 59-45 lead after the first six minutes. The Owls could not get the lid off the basket for the first 6:30 of the final quarter. A three-point play by East ended the drought.
> ECU outscored Temple 25-7 in the final quarter.
Game Notes
> Perea's seven first half rebounds are the second-best rebounding half of her career, topped only her first half last game against Houston where she racked up eight.
> Garner put up a season-high in rebounds with nine. She fell just short of her second career double-double with eight points.
> Nelson has now scored in double-figures in seven straight games.
