Women’s Tennis Honors Two Doubles Pairings in ITA National Rankings
2.8.23 | Women's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. - Temple women's tennis (2-1) saw two doubles pairs earn national rankings, as announced by the ITA on Feb. 8. Jamie Wei and Maiko Uchijima continue to shine, being ranked No. 6, while Evie Wei and Veronika Kulhava enter the mix for the first time in their career with a No. 55 ranking. This major feat serves as the first time two doubles pairs have been ranked simultaneously under the guidance of Mauro.
E. Wei and Kulhava have played from the second position in all three matches of the spring season so far, winning the point in two of the three. The pair shined against VCU, downing the preseason ranked doubles pair of Yelizaveta Karlova and Victoria Matasova, who were tabbed No. 30 entering the season. Each of Temple's victories this season have featured a win from this pairing in doubles play.
J. Wei and Uchijima went 14-1 through the fall season, which included a run in the ITA National Championship, defeating the No. 3 ranked team and advancing to the quarterfinals. This fall, they have gone undefeated, sitting at 1-0 in dual play.
With a 2-1 team record, the Owls display great balance between their starting three positions. The No. 6 ranked pair of graduate-student Jamie Wei and freshman Maiko Uchijima have played from the No. 1 position while the No. 55 pair of junior Evie Wei and sophomore Veronika Kulhava have secured the No. 2 spot.
"I am very proud of our women's doubles teams," Head Coach Steve Mauro said. "Both Evie and Veronika have been working hard and I am very happy to see them rank as No. 55. Jamie and Maiko continue to play outstanding doubles. It's a real credit to their work ethic in practice especially with the help of Coach Girsang who has done a tremendous job working with the double's teams, so they are able to compete with the best teams in the country."
The Owls will now continue to prepare for a busy weekend ahead, hosting the St. Francis College of Brooklyn Terriers on Friday, Feb. 10 at 10:30 a.m. in Cherry Hill, NJ., before coming back to Philadelphia to host Wagner on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Penn with matches starting at 5:00 p.m.
