Ryan Sandell Named Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

3.1.23 | Men's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Ryan Sandell, who helped Penn reach the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a member of the Quakers staff, has been named an assistant coach with the Temple men's soccer team, announced head coach Bryan Green.

"Ryan was someone who's name kept coming up from different people throughout the process," Coach Green said. "He has very good experience at three different programs and was a part of Penn's success last year. I wanted to make sure we had someone who could work with and bring out the best in our goalkeepers and he proved his ability to do that while working with Penn's keepers over the last few years. Additionally, he's from the area and has a lot of pride for Philadelphia and will be a great fit for our program.  Most importantly Ryan is a great person and will be a great leader and mentor for our student-athletes."

Sandell comes to Temple after serving as a volunteer assistant coach with the Quakers the past two seasons. Throughout his tenure there, Penn won its first Ivy League Championship since 2013 finishing with a 13-3-2 overall record while going 6-1-0 in conference play. In their championship run, Penn ranked as high as No. 15 in the nation.

"I could not be more excited to join Coach Green and the staff at Temple and get to work on what I'm sure is the start of something special here at TU," Sandell said. "I would also like to thank Penn Men's Soccer: the players, coaches, administrators, and support staff, for the experience I gained as part of that program the past two years, and for an unforgettable 2022 season. Looking ahead, our group at Temple holds a lot of promise. It's always an exciting prospect as a coach to help build something, and that is what I know Coach Green, the rest of the staff, and the players are all working toward. There is a great deal of history in the Temple Men's Soccer program, and hopefully, with a lot of hard work, we can make some more. Go Owls!"

At Penn, Sandell was responsible for the goalkeepers – a position he played throughout his career. Last season, Penn's goalkeepers averaged less than a goal per game allowed (0.77 GAA) and posted seven shutouts.

His coaching career began in 2018 when he joined Drexel University as a volunteer assistant and goalkeepers coach before accepting his first full-time coaching offer with Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA., a year later.

The city of Philadelphia has been familiar to Sandell for quite some time as he was a standout goalkeeper for St. Joseph's Prep, earning first-team All-Catholic league honors. He would then play collegiately for Elizabethtown College where he finished his career with a 0.68 GAA, a .825 save percentage, and eight shutouts.

Following graduation, Sandell started his semi-professional career with the Philadelphia Fury of the American Soccer League before heading overseas for Skellefteå, Sweden to join Morön BK. While there, he helped lead the team to a league title while starting all 22 games for a 15-2-1 regular season record. In over 1,620 minutes, he held a 0.66 GAA and had eight shutouts between the pipes.

Sandell becomes the first assistant hired by Green since he took over in January. The Owls open their spring season on March 17 when they host the Drexel Dragons at the Temple Sports Complex.
