Temple University Athletics

Staff Spotlight: Jack Lynch
3.21.23 | General
This is the 15th in a biweekly series spotlighting the men and women behind the scenes supporting Temple Athletics.
Jack Lynch joined Temple Athletics as a full-time staff member in August of 2022.
The Fanwood, N.J native is part of Temple's video production team which is responsible for all ESPN live broadcasts as well as in-venue video board shows at Liacouras Center, McGonigle Hall, and Temple Sports Complex. In particular, he serves as the lead director for Temple field hockey on ESPN+.
A 2022 Temple graduate, Lynch worked with the department as a student intern for four years prior to being hired full-time. As an intern, he worked lead positions on live ESPN+ broadcasts in Temple's newly renovated control room as well as researching home and away team's storylines and statistics to use during broadcasts.
You are truly Temple Made! Talk about what it means to be working at your alma mater right after graduation?
"It is amazing. My older sister, Jenny, introduced me to Temple. She was a student here who worked for the football team. She connected me with Dave Gerson my freshman year. I then started as a student worker here. Then to be able to stick around after graduation and working for my school it is amazing. I love Temple. I love North Philadelphia. To be able to work here is perfect. It is exactly what I need."
How did your tenure as a student worker in our video production unit prepare you for your current role?
"It prepared me immensely. Obviously meeting Kevin Copp, Russ Troeller and Kevin Hession and learning from these guys has been awesome. Being able to work on an ESPN production as a student is crazy. Not many people can say they have done that. So being able to understand the little details of working for a broadcast on ESPN as a student and then being able to take everything that I have learned and use it as a full-time employee is perfect. I never felt like I was a student to these men. It felt like I was a co-worker and that was really important to me."
Temple has a tremendous Klein School that prepares students for full-time careers in media production, how did that help you?
"The Klein School was great. I was a media studies and production student, and I worked on a couple of shows for the Klein School, including OwlSports Update where I was a producer and a director. OwlSports Update taught me so much about the broadcast industry. Matt Fine is the professor and is nothing short of amazing. They have won so many awards and OwlSports Update really prepared me for this crazy broadcasting business. I am so thankful for what I learned from the Klein School."
What has been the most significant accomplishment you have had in your first full-time year at Temple Athletics?
"My specialty with the broadcasts is graphics. Learning graphics is difficult, especially with the software that we use. We had seven linear games for men's basketball. It is very high stress environment. You get in hours before the game and are grinding, building all the graphics. My biggest accomplishment came at the end of the year when the producers I was working with started using graphics I had come up with for ESPN+ broadcasts. That was a big accomplishment, seeing something I had built completely on my own used for the highest level of broadcasts."
What do you envision for your future? Where do you see yourself in five, 10 years?
"I love Temple. I love working for a university, but I can definitely see myself being a producer, staying with graphics as it is what I enjoy doing. I do enjoy directing as well, so maybe directing broadcasts for ESPN, hopefully. Staying in the graphics realm is nice as it lets you explore storylines and research statistics as there is so much that goes into a simple graphic. I can also definitely see myself being a producer and traveling around working at different games across the country."
