Lacrosse Falls to No. 5 JMU in Conference Opener, 10-8

3.25.23 | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA – Temple lacrosse (5-5, 0-1 AAC), dropped to No. 5 JMU (10-1, 2-0 AAC) by a final score of 10-8 on Saturday afternoon at Howarth Field. The Dukes came out strong, but the Owls were relentless, posting a seven-goal second half performance, which included five goals in the final quarter of play, while also holding the Dukes scoreless.

Recapping the Game
  • JMU opened play with the first three goals of the game, but with just six seconds left in the quarter, Camryn Zavacky put the Owls on the board off an assist from Mackenzie Roth
  • The Dukes regained momentum right out of the gate, securing four more goals to lead into half with the 7-1 advantage.
  • Depsite JMU's offensive success, sophomore Taylor Grollman had a standout performance in goal, posting five of her nine saves in the second quarter of play.
  • JMU posted two more goals, before Belle Mastropietro netted the second of the day for the Cherry and White. She converted off a Maeve Tobin dish to bring the score to 9-2.
  • Amelia Wright added one of her own just five minutes later after Mastropietro found her open in the eight meter for a quality finish.
  • The Dukes kept their foot on the gas, finding a goal with six seconds to play in the quarter to enter the final 15 minutes with a 10-3 lead.
  • Defender Maddie Barber secured her second goal of the season to open the fourth quarter, followed by a Roth finish off a Zavacky assist.
  • Mastropietro struck again, advancing the Owl deficit to just four goals, before Julie Schickling added another for the Cherry and White.
  • With four minutes remaining, Mastropietro found Wright once again, putting the score at 10-8.
  • The Owls continued to exert pressure, but it wouldn't be enough to close in on the two goal differential, falling to nationally ranked Dukes, 10-8.

Quotable
"I think we had a really good second half push and that was a big win for us," Head Coach Bonnie Rosen said.  "We looked to come out in the second half and bounce back and we really did that. We started to execute at a higher level and we were really right there."
