Temple Well-Represented at APPLE Training Institute

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Athletics was well represented at the APPLE Training Institute held in Charlottesville, Va. on March 17-19.  Three athletics staff members, Tia Withers, Coordinator of Leadership Operations, Melissa Graham, Mental Health Counselor, and Dr. Fafa Tsikata, Associate Athletics Trainer, were joined by student-athletes Elijah Clark (football), Falanika Danielson (volleyball) and Natalie DeMasi (women's soccer) attended the three-day event.   

A wide range of topics discussed included:
> Improve relationships between administrators and student athletes.
> Increase their understanding of the APPLE model.
> Increase their ability to impact substance misuse problems.
> Increase student ability to confront teammates.
> Increase student leadership skills.
> Increase knowledge of alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) issues for student-athletes.
> Increase knowledge of effective ATOD prevention programs.

There were also breakout sessions focused on the following areas:
> Alcohol, cannabis misuse and Team success
> Morgan's Message
> De-stigmatizing the culture of self-seeking behavior – Creating a culture of care that allows staff, faculty, coaches, and student-athletes to seek assistance and increasing our ability to recognize when our student-athletes are in distress.

The group will take this information and present an action plan to the athletics department with the goal for it to be implemented into Temple Athletics department policies moving forward.
