PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's tennis player Jamie Wei was honored for her academic and athletic performance as she was named the 2022-23 PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Women's Tennis Performer of the Year. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.
It's Wei's first nod to the all-area academic team after she and partner Maiko Uchijima earned a spot on the 2023 AAC All-Conference team along with a trip to the NCAA Regionals. The two finished 28-3 overall on the season, including 14-2 out of the first position of dual play. Wei and Uchijima reached national recognition early in the season by earning a No. 5 ITA ranking. Overall, the graduate student earned 15 dual doubles wins, the second most in single-season school history. Additionally, in singles, Wei finished 21-4, including 14-2 in dual singles, tying for the second most dual doubles wins in single-season school history. She was perfect in the first position, going 5-0, and 1-0 in the third, but spent the majority of the year in the second position going 8-2.
In April, the Chaiyi, Taiwan native was named the recipient of the NCAA Women's Enhancement Graduate Scholarship. The plaudit is given to undergraduates positing a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 in their final season of NCAA athletics eligibility. Wei graduated with a degree in psychology and is currently working towards a graduate degree in sports business.
Joining Wei on this year's Academic All-Area Women's Tennis Team is Sarah Ahrens (Rutgers-Camden), Ellie Esterowitz (Haverford), Noelle Frenzel (Thomas Jefferson), Nele Haag (Chestnut Hill), and Nicole Hrbkova (Gwynedd Mercy).
