Men’s Soccer Announces 2023 Schedule for Green’s Inaugural Campaign
6.21.23 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA — Head men's soccer coach Bryan Green has announced the schedule for his first season leading the program. Highlighting the exciting slate are six teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament last season, including 2022 National Champion Syracuse, and two Philadelphia Soccer Six rivals in Drexel and Saint Joseph's. Temple will play six home matches at the Temple Sports Complex; attendance will be free to all fans.
"We are excited to get started with our 2023 season," Green said. "It will be a very challenging schedule both with the quality of our opponents as well as having 10 road games. But we are a group that loves a challenge, and we look forward to playing in all the different environments. It will also make us that much more motivated to make the most of the few chances we get to play at home in front of our fans."
Temple will begin the season with a pair of nearby road matches at Monmouth (8/24) and Lehigh (8/28). Last season, the Owls defeated Lehigh 1-0 to kick off the year. The Cherry & White will open its home slate with a matchup against Soccer Six foe Saint Joseph's on Sept. 5. Despite having met on the pitch a total of 60 times, the two have not played since 2017. The Hawks are the Owls' third most-played opponent in program history, behind only Penn State and La Salle. Three days later, Temple will host American for a Friday afternoon matchup on Sept. 8.
The Owls will then hit the road for three straight road matchups, their longest of the season, traveling up I-95 to Queens to face off against BIG EAST opponent St. John's on Sept. 11. Temple has competed against the Red Storm in scrimmages the past two seasons. TU will then head south to Miami for its first-ever trip to FIU to open the AAC portion of the schedule (9/16). Three days later, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, the Owls will cross town to University City to battle Soccer Six rival Drexel.
Temple will dip into the heart of conference play as the Owls host UAB for the first time on Sept. 23 before heading south to perennial powerhouse Charlotte on Sept. 29. Next up, the Cherry and White play host to FAU in a battle of the Owls on Oct. 4. Temple defeated FAU 1-0 when the two met in Boca Raton, Fla. last season. After a week off, Temple will head to defending national champion Syracuse for a Tuesday showdown in the Empire State (10/10) before hosting South Florida on Oct. 14.
As the Owls hit the home stretch of the season, Temple will head to Long Island for a fixture against the Stony Brook Seawolves (10/17). When the two met last season, the Owls claimed a 2-0 victory. The Cherry and White will finish out its slate with three straight conference matchups, at Memphis on Oct. 21, home against national power Tulsa on Oct. 27, with the finale coming in Dallas against SMU (11/1).
For the second consecutive season, the American Athletic Conference will determine a champion with a six-team, three-round conference tournament to be held from Nov. 6-12 at the home of the No. 1 seed.
