Women's to Open 2023 Season With Game Against William & Mary

PHILADELPHIA- Temple women's soccer is ready to go this fall, facing CAA competitor William & Mary in the season opener on Thursday, Aug. 17. The match is set for 7 p.m. at the Temple Sports Complex and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.  
 
The Owls will open the 2023 season against a variation of top opponents, including four City Six teams, the most Temple has faced in one season since 2007. Recently, the American Athletic Conference welcomed six new members. The Owls will compete against five of them this season. Temple's 2023 schedule is packed with home appearances, with 10 matches taking place at Temple Sports Complex. Attendance is free to all fans. 

"We're very excited for our 2023 slate of matches," head coach Nick Bochette said. "There have been a lot of changes within our program and within the American Athletic Conference, and we believe our schedule is full of opportunities for our group to show the level we can reach and what we're made of." 
 
This year's squad includes 11 new players; six freshman and five transfers/fifth years. One-third of the new crew is international. 

Tamsin Bynoe, a freshman goalkeeper, is a native of St. Helens, United Kingdom. Looking to major in psychology, Bynoe joins the squad with two years of prior play with Liverpool FC, and four years with Manchester United.  Anna-Lena Stein, a graduate defender, joins the nest from Schalkenbach, Germany as an aspiring bioengineering master's student. Stein transferred to Temple from St. Thomas University, where she played for two years after coming to St. Thomas from Point Loma Nazarene University.  

Caroline Oestergaard, a freshman midfielder, ventures from her hometown in Herfoelge, Denmark. Oestergaard looks to major in art. The aspiring midfielder previously played for Koege BK throughout her high school career. Julie Jakobsen, a freshman defender, is a native of Viby Sjælland, Denmark. Like Oestergaard, Jakobsen played for Koege BK throughout high school. Jakobsen strives to major in Environmental Science.  

 Scouting William & Mary 
- The Tribe enters the 2023 season with a new face, as Gabby Isola joins the coaching staff as second assistant coach. The position serves as Isola's third assistant coaching stint, after serving on the Fordham and Ohio University coaching staffs. 
- William and Mary posted a 7-8-4 record in 2022, which included a 3-3-3 conference performance. The Tribe started the season off with a 2-0-3 record in the first five games.  
- Ivey Crain, the leading scorer in 2022 returns as a sophomore for the Tribe. Crain notched nine goals and six assists to end the season with 24 points, leading the team by a 12-point margin. The Tribe will continue to look to Zoey Doughty as their starting goalkeeper. Doughty recorded 62 saves in her 1440 minutes (about 1 day) of playing time in 2022, with a save percentage of 74.7%.  

Series History
- This is the second game between the two teams, with William and Mary topping the Owls in 1993.
