Volleyball Ready for UAB and Memphis in AAC Road Matches

PHILADELPHIA – Just two days after a five-set win versus the Binghamton Bearcats, the Temple Owls' volleyball team will hit the road for the third week of American Athletic Conference play. Temple begins the weekend versus the UAB Blazers on Friday night at 8 p.m. ET and will travel to Memphis on Sunday for a 2 p.m. ET first serve against the Tigers. Both matches will be available on ESPN+.

SCOUTING TEMPLE
  • The Owls moved to 8-9 overall after Wednesday's non-conference, five-set, 22-25, 25-13, 25-14, 14-25, 15-13-win with the Binghamton Bearcats.
  • In the match versus Binghamton, Temple hit .248 as a team, while freshman Sydney Jones and graduate student Taylor Davenport combined for 46 kills. In the match, Jones tallied a match and career-high 25 kills, while Davenport connected with 21. Libero Hikialani Kaohelaulii dug a match-high 20 balls.
  • Offensively in 60 sets, the Owls are ranked fourth in the AAC with 988.5 points while averaging 16.48 points per set. With 738 kills, the Cherry and White are ranked fifth and are sixth with 12.30 kills per set.
  • The Columbia, S.C native Davenport continues to lead the AAC this season in four offensive categories, including kills (258), kills per set (4.30), points (295.5), points per set (4.93).
  • As a first-year, Jones is putting herself in the top offensive players in the conference. The Havertown, Pa. native is third in aces per set with .40, fourth with 3.32 kills per set, ninth with 156 kills, third with 3.86 points per set, and eight 185.5 total points.
  • In the last three matches, Temple has combined for 31 blocks, helping the team to a league-best 147.5 total blocks and 2.46 blocks per set.
  • TU have three players averaging .80 blocks or better. Junior Katie Hickey has a team-best 1.03 k/s, while teammate Chelci Banks is second with .94 and junior Alyssa Finister ranks third on the team with .80.
SCOUTING UAB
  • The Blazers come into the match 5-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play and are in 13th place in the American Athletic Conference going into the weekend.
  • UAB come out of last weekend with a 0-3 loss to Wichita State. Crook added 17 skills to her season tally, making four games with 15+ kills. Kelsey Smith and Annastiina Tarkkanen provided double-digit assist with 21 and 12, respectively.
  • Jara Crook leads the UAB offense 174 kills while Smith has provided 302 assists.
  • The defense sees Madison Page and Crook lead the team in 59 and 38 blocks, respectively.
HISTORY VERSUS UAB
  • The Blazers hold a 2-1 record versus the Owls. With UAB joining the AAC last year, the teams split the series. The teams faced each other one in 1991, with the Blazers walking away victorious.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS
  • The Tigers come into the weekend 7-9 overall, 1-3 in conference.
  • The Tigers came out of the weekend with losses to conference rivals Fla. Atlantic (0-3) and South Florida (1-3). Florida Atlantic held the Tigers to 53 points over three sets, only reaching 20 points in the first set. Clara Bednarek and Jones tallied eight kills each, followed by Jasmine Tate. Sunday saw the Tigers fall to the Bulls despite 11 kills from Jones and 26 assists from Jordan Heatherly.
  • Memphis holds down ninth place in the AAC with a game against Charlotte on Oct. 11 before the matchup against Temple on Oct. 13.
  • Memphis has three players with triple-digit kills on the season, led by Hannah Jones' 163. Heatherly has dished out 501 assists so far this season.
  • Bednarek leads the defensive efforts for the Tigers with 37 blocks.
HISTORY VERSUS MEMPHIS
  • The Cherry and White lead the series against the Tigers, 12-7. The Tigers have bested Temple, 5-1, over the last three years.
UP NEXT
The Owls travel to East Carolina on Oct. 18 before returning to McGonigle Hall in against the Charlotte 49ers on Oct. 20.
