Chelci Banks ties career-high with eight blocks

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple volleyball team (6-9, 0-3 AAC) fell to South Florida (7-7, 3-0 AAC) in straight sets, 23-25, 26-28, 23-25, on Friday night in McGonigle Hall. Senior Chelci Banks led the Owls defense with a career-high with eight blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The middle blocker Banks had a strong offensive match with five kills, hitting .625.
  • Freshman Sydney Jones was the only Owl in double figures with 11 kills, hitting a season-high .348.
  • Cherry and White graduate student Taylor Davenport fell one ace short of a career high as she finished with five.
  • Naiya Sawtelle led the Bulls with 15 kills and teammate Maria Clara Andrade tallied 14.

SET 1 (USF 25, TEM 23)
  • The Bulls started the match on a 3-0 run with Andrade getting two of her 14 kills, but both teams traded a pair of points, and then the Owls tied the set 4-4 as they got a kill from Jones, an ace from Davenport, and block by Banks.
  • With USF up by one point, 7-6, they pulled away scoring six of the next seven points.
  • South Florida continued to hold the advantage, but Temple forced a USF timeout as they started to creep closer, scoring six of the next seven points, tying the set at 18 with help of kills from its freshmen Jones and Christiana Greene (2).
  • The Bulls regained the lead out of the timeout, never to let it go with Andrade putting away four balls of down the stretch.

SET 2 (USF 28, TEM 26)
  • Temple came out on fire in the second set, leading by seven points (18-11) with Jones' three of her seven-set kills and a three aces: one from graduate Avery Luoma and two from Davenport.
  • USF thwarted off the Cherry and White run by scoring 11of the next 15 points, tying the set at 22-22. Sawtelle connected with four kills and a service ace during her team's comeback.
  • The Bulls scored the final three points to win the set.
  • Andrade (6) and Sawtelle (9) combined for 15 kills for USF, while Jones hit .600 with six kills for the Owls.

SET 3 (USF 25, TEM 23)
  • Just like set two, TU came out on fire leading by six points, 8-2, with Banks getting three of her eight blocks in the match and two more aces by Davenport.
  • With the lead remaining at six points, USF scored four straight points to cut the deficit to two points (13-11). Off the bench Imani Hartfield sparked her team with a pair of kills and solo block during the run.
  • Down by five points, 20-15, South Florida scored eight of the next nine points with the help of Caroline Dykes three service aces.
  • Temple tied the set, 23-23, with back-to-back kills from freshman Mickhaila Murray and Davenport, but it wasn't enough with USF finishing off the 3-0 win with back-to-back kills of their own.
