Mashburn Jr. Eclipses 2,000-Point Mark for Collegiate Career; Men's Basketball Defeats UMass, 87-80

11.23.24 | Men's Basketball

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - Temple guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored the 2,000th point of his collegiate career and registered a game-high 26 points to help the Owls to a 87-80 win over UMass at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off on Saturday. The Owls (4-2) had five players score in double figures in the total team effort - Mashburn Jr., Quante Berry (12), Steve Settle III (12), Zion Stanford (11), and Jameel Brown (10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight night, the Owls opened up strong and led 7-2 following a three-point play by Quante Berry.
  • UMass responded with seven straight points to take a brief lead, and the Owls returned the favor with an 8-0 spurt to regain a 15-9 advantage.
  • Temple extended its lead to 15 at 32-17, before the Minutemen slowly came back thanks to their efforts from the charity stripe.
  • UMass held a 24-11 advantage in free-throw attempts through the first 20 minutes, making 18 of them.
  • Free throws accounted for seven straight points from UMass over a stretch that cut the margin to 34-32.
  • The Owls closed the half strong, and a shot-clock beating three by Jameel Brown put the score at 43-36 heading into intermission.
  • Temple quickly opened up a 10-point lead following a three from Shane Dezonie at the 15:53 mark and throughout the second half fended off UMass at every turn.
  • Mashburn Jr. was the catalyst offensively, scoring 16 of his 26 points in the first half and doing most of his damage in the second at the free-throw line.
  • His two free throws with 13:50 to go pushed him over the 2,000-point mark for his collegiate career.
  • From there, Temple held a relatively comfortable cushion to snap a two-game losing skid.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mashburn Jr. went 7-for-10 from the field in the first half as the Owls shot 48.5 percent over the first 20 minutes as a team.
