OPENING TIP
- Temple men's basketball will square off against La Salle for the 123rd meeting between the two schools on Saturday afternoon. The game will air live on ESPN+.
- The matchup is a big one, with both teams standing at 1-0 in the Big 5 Classic Pod 1 standings. The winner of Saturday's contest will earn the right to play in the championship game of the Toyota Big 5 Classic against Saint Joseph's on Saturday, Dec. 7 inside Wells Fargo Center.
- The Owls and Explorers played an all-timer in their last matchup last season at Liacouras Center, with Temple coming away with a 106-99, triple-overtime victory.
- Steve Settle III was one of three players in the game (2 for La Salle) to play 50 or more minutes and closed with a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with 19 points.
- Five Temple players fouled out in the game, forcing the bench to play a critical role in the contest. Then-freshmen Zion Stanford and Quante Berry stepped up, combining for 28 points and 11 rebounds in 42 minutes.
- Matteo Picarelli played the second-most minutes on the team with 45, and closed with 11 points.
- The game was the first triple overtime game for the Owls since Feb. 11, 1990, when Temple defeated UMass, 83-32, in Amherst.
- It was just the third triple overtime in Big 5 history, and the first since 1980, and was the second-most combined points in a Big 5 game behind only La Salle-Villanova's triple-overtime battle in 1958.
- Jamal Mashburn Jr. scored the 2,000th point of his collegiate career on November 23 against UMass.
- The graduate transfer matched his season high with 26 points in the victory, and a free throw at the 13:50 mark of the 2nd half gave him his 2,000th career point spanning five seasons -- one at Minnesota, three at New Mexico, and this one at Temple.
- Mashburn Jr. has scored 20+ in six straight games to start his Temple career.
- La Salle, under former Temple coach Fran Dunphy, has started the season strong with a 5-2 record.
- The only two blemishes on their slate came last week at the Boardwalk Battle event in Florida.
- Former Owl Jahlil White is averaging 12.6 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Explorers, while another transfer - Corey McKeithan from Rider - paces the squad in scoring at 17.7 ppg.
- Temple and La Salle, two original Philadelphia Big 5 members, began the series back in 1899.
- The Owls have dominated overall with an 81-42 record, and Temple has won 28 Big 5 titles -- second only to Villanova's 29.
- The Owls will stay in Philadelphia and participate in the Toyota Big 5 Classic at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, Dec. 7.
- This marks the second year the Owls and all of the other Big 5 schools will take part in the tripleheader at the home of the Philadelphia 76ers.
