Mashburn Electrifies as Temple Wins Season Opener

11.4.24 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Jamal Mashburn Jr. electrified the Liacouras Center faithful in his Temple debut, scoring 26 as the Owls topped the Sacred Heart Pioneers 81-70 in the season opener on Monday evening.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mashburn led all scorers with his 26. The Miami, Fla. native went 10-for-16 from the floor including 5-of-7 from three-point range.
  • With his point total, Mashburn reached double digits for the 100th time in his career, joining Johni Broome of Auburn (116), RJ Davis of North Carolina (106) and Ray Harrison of Grand Canyon (101) as the only active players to reach the mark.
  • Steve Settle III tallied 16 in the contest and tied a career-high with six assists. He further stuffed the stat sheet with three blocks and seven boards.
  • Jameel Brown provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, connecting on 3-of-5 from distance.
  • Shane Dezonie tied for the Temple lead with seven rebounds.
  • As a team, Temple shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a slow start for the Owls who found themselves down by 10 in the early going before a 10-0 run to knot the score at 15-15 at the 12:39 mark. Mashburn was key in the run, scoring half of the team's points in the span.
  • Later in the half, the Cherry and White found its stroke from beyond the arc as three consecutive treys spurred a 11-2 run, helping the Owls take a 37-36 lead into the locker room.
  • A hot start for the Pioneers allowed them to push out to a 52-46 lead with 12:34 remaining in the game, but Temple caught fire from distance as a 17-3 run that contained four treys, two of them from Jameel Brown, gave TU a 63-55 advantage in a matter of just three minutes.
  • Sacred Heart was able to cut the lead to four with 2:52 remaining, but the Owls hit six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
