Last Time Out - Mashburn Electrifies as Temple Wins Season Opener
Jamal Mashburn Jr. electrified the Liacouras Center faithful in his Temple debut, scoring 26 as the Owls topped the Sacred Heart Pioneers 81-70 in the season opener on Monday evening.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mashburn led all scorers with his 26. The Miami, Fla. native went 10-for-16 from the floor including 5-of-7 from three-point range.
  • Steve Settle III tallied 16 in the contest and tied a career-high with six assists. He further stuffed the stat sheet with three blocks and seven boards.
  • Jameel Brown provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, connecting on 3-of-5 from distance.
  • Shane Dezonie tied for the Temple lead with seven rebounds.
  • As a team, Temple shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Keeping It 💯
With his 26 points, Mashburn reached double digits for the 100th time in his career, joining Johni Broome of Auburn (116), RJ Davis of North Carolina (106) and Ray Harrison of Grand Canyon (101) as the only active players to reach the mark.

Getting It Started Right
With the win on Monday, Temple is now 101-28 all-time in season openers. The Owls are also 21-7 in their first game of the year at the Liacouras Center, starting with the building's opening game on December 9, 1997, a 76-61 victory against No. 18 Fresno State.

Picking Up Where He Left Off
When last we saw Steve Settle III, he was excelling in the AAC Championship on his way to All-Tournament team accolades. The redshirt-senior from Glenarden Md. hasn't missed a beat to start the 2024-25 season, scoring 16 points with seven rebounds against Sacred Heart. After leading the Owls in blocks last year with 30, he opened the season with three rejections against the Pioneers.

Youth Movement
Two true freshmen made their collegiate debuts against SHU as Babatunde Durodola and Dillon Battie saw their first action. The pair combined for eight points, three rebounds, a block and a steal in 25 total minutes.

Sharing Is Caring
Temple delivered 14 assists in the game against Sacred Heart, a mark it reached just seven times in 36 games a year ago.

Long Distance Dedication
Taking a lot of threes is part of Adam Fisher's offense as evidenced by the 296 triples made last season, the second most in program history. If Monday night is any indication, the record could be challenged again as the Cherry and White made 11 three-pointers and shot 47.8 percent from beyond the arc. Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jameel Brown did the majority of the damage from deep, going a combined 8-for-12. Quante Berry added a pair of treys as well.

Scouting Report
Monmouth holds a 0-1 record after falling to Michigan State 81-57 in East Lansing on Monday night. Sophomore guard Abdi Bashir led the team with 20 points. Despite shooting 93.7% from the free throw line and narrowing the game to a six-point deficit in the second half, the Hawks couldn't keep up with the Spartans.

Last season, Monmouth finished with an 18-15 record and were ranked eighth in the CAA preseason poll. Boasting a 13-1 home record, they also played three games against Big Five teams, losing to Penn and splitting two matchups with CAA opponent Drexel. In transition play, the team excelled, ranking 47th nationally with an average of 12.79 fastbreak points per game.

The Hawks welcome an influx of new talent this season, adding eight players to the roster, including six transfers and two freshmen. One standout is transfer guard Madison Durr from The Citadel, who led the Bulldogs in assists and ranked as their third-highest scorer last season.

Among returners, redshirt sophomore Jaret Valencia was selected to the preseason All-CAA Second Team, and junior guard Jack Collins received an honorable mention. Collins is the top returning scorer, having averaged 10.7 points per game last season. Valencia made his mark defensively, ranking 58th nationally with an average of 1.67 blocks per game.

Head coach King Rice is in his 14th season as the head man for the Hawks. Rice is the winningest coach in Monmouth history with an overall record of 207-209 through his time in Central New Jersey and has received a trio of MAAC Coach of the Year honors prior to Monmouth joining the CAA for the 2022-23 season. Rice also had a distinguished playing career, suiting up for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 1987-1991 under coach Dean Smith.

New Faces
10 incoming players are a part of the Temple roster in 2024-25. Six transfers join four freshman on the team. Among the newcomers is Jamal Mashburn Jr. was a three-time All-Mountain West honoree at New Mexico.  Lynn Greer III, Jameel Brown and Elijah Gray each  come to the Owls with Power 5 or high major experience, coming from Saint Joseph's, Penn State and Fordham, respectively. Mohamed Keita is familiar with the AAC, playing at Tulsa last season. Christian Tomasco joins Temple from CAA school, Hofstra. The freshman quartet of Babatunde Durodola, Dillon Battie, Aiden Tobiason and Holden Pierre-Louis was named the top-ranked recruiting class in the AAC by rivals.com

The Big Man
Standing at 7'1", Mohamed Keita is just the sixth seven-footer to appear on the Owls roster since 1989-90 and the first since Sergio Olmos in 2008-09.

Ties To The League
A lot of schools have a son of an NBA player on their roster, but Temple is one of a select few to feature multiple NBA progenies. Jamal Mashburn Jr. is the son of Jamal Mashburn, who was the No. 4 pick in the 1993 NBA draft. Lynn Greer III is the son of Temple Hall of Famer Lynn Greer who played for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ties To Temple
It's not just Greer who is the son of a TU alum. Dillon Battie is the son of Derrick Battie who played four seasons for the Owls. The elder Battie scored 840 points and pulled in 641 rebounds across 123 games, competed in four NCAA Tournaments and was a a freshman starter on the 1993 Elite Eight squad. Additionally, Dillon's uncle, Tony, was the No. 5 pick in the 1997 NBA draft and played 14 years in the league.
