Third Time is The Charm: Temple Downs ODU to Advance to BIG EAST Final

11.8.24 | Field Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I.Agustina Tucceri scored 3:05 into the second overtime as the Temple field hockey team downed the No. 20 Old Dominion Monarchs, 2-1 to advance to the finals of the BIG EAST tournament.

It is the first appearance for the Owls in the BIG EAST final since 2015 and just their third ever appearance.

QUOTABLE
"It means something when you have corners, especially in overtime because there's way more space. It's also about reading the play. I know what the corner is…You just look at the play and see it wide open. We train that corner so many times, so in fact, practice makes perfect." –Alizé Maes on the pass that set up the game-winning goal

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Tucceri redirected a pass from Alizé Maes for the game winner in the second overtime.
  • Lina Neilson tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth quarter with her first goal of the season.
  • Peyton Rieger posted an assist on Neilson's goal.
  • Temple held the Monarchs to just five penalty corners in the game. ODU came in fifth nationally averaging more than nine per contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Three minutes into the second overtime, Temple earned a penalty corner. After receiving the insert, Maes looked like she would take the shot, but instead passed to Tucceri who redirected the ball into the top of the cage.
  • The Monarchs got the first goal of the game five minutes in, collecting a loose ball in front of the cage to score off a corner.
  • Temple controlled play through the next quarter, earning four corners in the second. In the third, the Owl continued to press the play, but trailed heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • The Cherry and White broke through at the 5:27 mark of the fourth. On a corner, the ball was swept into the circle. Rieger tipped the ball onto the waiting stick of Neilson who knocked home her first goal of the season, tying the contest at 1-1.
  • Isabella Ospitale kept the game tied and forced the second OT with a sprawling save in the waning seconds of the first extra session.
