Women's Basketball Clinches Spot in Big 5 Classic Championship Game with Win Over La Salle

PHILADELPHIA- Temple women's basketball (4-3, 0-0 AAC) defeated La Salle (4-4, 0-0 A10) 73-68 in their second Big 5 matchup of the season. Kaylah Turner led the Owls with 17 points off the bench, shooting 50% from the field. Tarriyonna Gary scored 12 of the 24 points for the Owls in the fourth quarter.

Temple will take part in the first Big 5 Classic Tournament on December 6, in Villanova, Pa., at Finneran Pavilion. The Owls will face Villanova at 8pm.

First Quarter
- After winning the tip the Owls scored first with a jumper from Jaleesa Molina at the 9:53 mark.
- Temple and La Salle went back and forth in the first quarter both finding early buckets with the lead never exceeding two points
- Jumpers from Tiarra East and Molina before the media timeout put the Owls up 8-6.
- La Salle took the lead after a three from Jolene Armendariz and a free throw by Aryss Macktoon with 3:44 remaining. (La Satte, 10-8).
- Anissa Rivera grabbed a steal and then bounced a pass to East for an assist, regaining the lead 11-10 at the 2:23 mark.
- The Owls were 0-3 from behind the 3-point line in the first quarter.
- Molina and East were the Owls' leading scorers in the first quarter, going a combined 4-9 with four points apiece.
- Temple trailed 15-13 after the conclusion of the first quarter.
- La Salle scored first in the second quarter extending their lead to 17-13.
- After being in a scoring drought for over two and a half minutes Kaylah Turner drove to the paint for a layup.
- Turner tied the game in the second following a pull-up jumper making it 19-19 with less than six minutes left. Turner has scored the last six points for the Owls'.
- East drove to the paint, made the layup, and drew a foul giving Temple the lead 29-27 with 3:10 remaining in the first half.
- The Owls closed out the quarter on a 13-3 run, heading into halftime with a 38-30 lead
- Tristen Taylor scored the first basket for the Owls in the second half.
- Both teams opened the third quarter moving in transition, stopping fast break opportunities.
- La Salle had a 5-1 rebound advantage over the Owls with 6:38 in the third quarter.
- Turner nailed a three at the 6:13 mark putting Temple up 43-36. La Salle responded with two jumpers cutting the lead to a one-possession game.
- Armendariz shot a corner three, followed by a steal and a layup giving La Salle the lead 47-43.
- La Salle went on a 15-3 run that lasted 6:41 in the third quarter.
- Amaya Oliver scored four straight points for the Owls tying the game 47-47.
- La Salle outscored the Owls 19-9 in the third quarter going 10-18 from the field and having a field goal percentage of 55%
- The Owls went 3-11 from the field in the third quarter while scoring just nine points.
- Gary opened the fourth quarter with a three making it a one-point game with 9:49 remaining.
- The Owls and Explorers traded buckets before the media timeout, keeping the game within a two-possession margin, with a tied score of 58-58 under five minutes to go.
- Savannah Curry grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a put-back to give the Owls a 60-58 lead.
- Gary drew a foul after hitting another three-pointer, putting Temple up 63-62 with under two minutes to play.
- With 1:34 remaining, Rivera blocked Macktoon's shot, and Temple regained possession. Gary was fouled and sank both free throws
- La Salle responds with a layup 66-67.
- All of Gary's points came from the fourth quarter scoring 12 of the 24 points of the Owls in the fourth quarter.
- The Owls forced three turnovers in the first quarter, one steal from Amaya Oliver and Anissa Rivera.
- Temple shot 35.3% in the first quarter 6-17 from the field and only 1-4 in free throws.
- The Owls had six offensive rebounds in the first half, three coming from Molina.
- At the end of the three quarters La Salle had double the number of offensive rebounds (14) compared to Temple's six.
- In the third quarter, Temple had 14 fast break points and nine points off of turnovers.
- Temple scored a season-low 9 points in the third quarter.
- Temple shot 52.9% in the fourth quarter after shooting 27.3% in the third.
