Temple Advances to the Championship Game Against #24 Cal at the Raising the B.A.R Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif.- Temple women's basketball (6-4, 0-0 AAC) defeated Xavier (4-7, 0-0 Big East) 66-51 in game one of the Raising the B.A.R Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. The Owls had three players in double digits, Tiarra East, Tarriyonna Gary, and Amaya Oliver. Oliver had her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
East surpassed 1,000 career points in tonight's game, scoring 20 points while going 7-13 from the floor and 4-6 from deep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Owls will play No. 24 California in the championship game, tomorrow at 8:00 PM ET at Haas Pavilion for the Raising the B.A.R Invitational.
East surpassed 1,000 career points in tonight's game, scoring 20 points while going 7-13 from the floor and 4-6 from deep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Temple won the tip and scored first with a floater from Amaya Oliver. On their first possession, Xavier responded with a three-pointer by Petra Oborilova.
- Tarriyonna Gary nailed a three at the 8:53 mark, giving Temple a 7-5 lead. Gary now moves to number six in all-time three-pointers in Temple history.
- Gary was 3-3 from the field before the media timeout giving the Owls a 10-7 lead over Xavier. She scored 10 of Temple's first 12 points.
- The Owls went on a 6-0 run, with points from Gary, Anissa Rivera, and Kaylah Turner, extending their lead over the Musketeers to nine points, 16-7.
- After a scoring drought, Xavier made a corner three cutting the lead to six points.
- The Owls forced 8 Xavier turnovers in the first quarter.
- To start the second quarter both teams demonstrated defensive toughness. Rivera denied Julia Garcia Roig for her second block of the night.
- With 7:30 remaining in the half, Xavier scored its first points of the quarter off of a fast break cutting Temple's lead to 18-14.
- Oliver drew a foul, nailing one of the two free throws.
- After a Xavier timeout, Tristen Taylor sank a basket, growing the Owls' lead to nine points, 23-14, with 5:57 left in the second quarter.
- Danielle Lopez cut the lead to six, 23-17, with a three-pointer, and East responded with two back-to-back jumpers extending Temple's lead to 27-17.
- East scored her 1000th point for the Owls with a three at the 3:41 mark.
- With back-to-back threes from Turner and Kelian Cedano the Owls extended their lead to 14 points, their largest lead in the game closing out the half 38-24.
- Gary found the basket first in the second half, after Oliver kept the possession alive grabbing a loose ball.
- Xavier opened the half with two jumpers cutting its deficit to 11, with 7:41 remaining.
- Oliver made a jumper and East made two three-pointers going on a 7-0 run giving Temple a 19-point lead early in the third quarter.
- East started the third quarter, going 2-2 from the floor, scoring six points.
- After the media timeout, Xavier scored a three cutting the lead to 13, 48-35.
- East moved around the screen and made a pull-up jumper and a three-pointer on the next possession, East now has 20 points with 27 seconds remaining in the quarter.
- After the first three quarters, Temple had a 34-18 rebound advantage over Xavier.
- The Musketeers went on a 5-0 run to begin the fourth quarter, Lopez scored the first points knocking down a triple and a jumper from Oborilova, 55-43 with 7:12 remaining.
- Rivera scored a jumper assisted by Gary. On the next possession, Gary drilled a three, keeping Temple's lead in the double digits, 60-43 with 5:40 remaining.
- Mayo scored back-to-back threes, cutting the deficit to 10 points, 61-51.
- Temple responded with points from Gary and Oliver with their lead extending to 14, 66-51 with under two minutes.
- Gary started the first quarter with four rebounds and eight points before the media timeout.
- The Owls shot 44% (8-18) in the first quarter and the Musketeers shot 36% (4-11).
- Temple ended the first quarter with 10 total rebounds.
- In the first quarter, Temple was 5-6 in layups generating 10 points in the paint.
- Temple shot 45.7% (16-35) in the first half from the field, with points from seven different Owls. After struggling from beyond the arc this season Temple shot 45.5% (5-11) two coming from Gary.
- The Cherry & White had 17 second-chance points in the first half and outrebounded Xavier 20-13.
- Temple capitalized off of Xavier's 13 turnovers with 13 points off of turnovers in the first half.
- Rivera had a season-high four blocks in tonight's matchup.
- Oliver had her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
