Men's Basketball Tripped Up by Villanova at Big 5 Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University men's basketball team was upended by Villanova, 94-65, at the Big Five Classic inside Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. Graduate student Jamal Mashburn Jr. had a team-high 20 points to lead the Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Villanova took an early 7-2 lead after a bucket from Jordan Longino, and quickly opened up a double-digit advantage through the early part of the half.
  • Consecutive three-pointers from Steve Settle III and Mashburn Jr. briefly cut the deficit to six at 24-18, but the Wildcats responded with a quick 8-0 run.
  • Villanova connected on eight of its first 14 three-pointers in the first half and held a 45-29 lead at intermission.
  • Mashburn Jr. finished with 12 points in the first half, but Temple suffered through a tough shooting performance (9-30, 30%).
  • The Wildcats continued to shoot well from beyond the arc in the second half, connecting on a season-high 19 three-pointers at a 63.3 percent clip.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Eric Dixon led all scorers with 24 points for VIllanova, including a 5-for-8 performance from distance.
  • Temple's Mashburn Jr. was joined in double figures by Settle III (11) and Zion Stanford (11).
  • The Owls distributed 14 assists against just seven turnovers for the contest.
