BY THE NUMBERS
- Hysier Miller led Temple with 14 points.
- Quante Berry tied a career-high with 13 and delivered a personal best four assists.
- Shane Dezonie netted nine in the contest with four rebounds.
- Zion Stanford netted nine. Sam Hofman scored eight with five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Temple got a boost from its bench and defense early on as after falling behind 14-5, the Owls forced three turnovers and got back-to-back-to-back baskets from Berry, slicing the lead to three at the midway mark of the frame.
- TU continued to apply pressure on the defensive end, forcing eight total miscues in the opening 17 minutes against a 49ers team that came into the game 20th nationally in fewest turnovers a contest. That helped Temple eventually tie the score at 21-21 on a layup by Sam Hofman before a halfcourt buzzer beater allowed Charlotte to take a lead into the break.
- The beginning of the second half continued to be a tight battle as neither team held more than a four-point lead in the opening eight minutes with the Owls tying the score at 43-43 on a three-pointer by Berry at the 12:53 mark. Charlotte followed with an 18-4 run, opening a 63-49 lead with 5:34 remaining.
- Temple continued to battle as treys by Dezonie and Stanford bookended a finger roll by Berry and a pair of free throws by Sam Hofman to trim the advantage to six with 3:02 to go. Once again, the defense played a big role for the Owls, holding the 49ers without a field goal for more than five minutes. The Owls twice closed the gap to a pair in the final minute, but Charlotte sealed the game at the line.
