Men's Basketball Takes Down Roadrunners as Settle Scores 1,000th Career Point

2.18.24 | Men's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Three players scored 15 or more points as the Temple University men's basketball team claimed a 83-77 win against the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hysier Miller led Temple with 20, his seventh game with 20+ points this season. He added a team high four assists and had a pair of blocks.
  • Steve Settle III netted 16. His first basket of the game, a three-pointer 2:33 into the contest marked the 1,000th point of his career. The Glenarden, Md. native had seven rebounds.
  • Jahlil White chipped in with 15 points off the bench.
  • Jordan Riley scored 12. Sam Hofman pulled in seven boards.
  • The Owls had six turnovers, its third consecutive game with single-digit giveaways.
  • TU shot 53.1 percent in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A close game throughout, Temple gained a bit of breathing room with five minutes to go. Holding a slim 68-67 lead, the Owls scored seven in a row, including a thunderous alley oop from Miller to White as part of a run that pushed the advantage to eight with 3:46 remaining. UTSA was able to close the gap to four, but a triple from Settle and free throws helped seal the victory.

Riley had the hot hand early on, scoring nine of the first 15 points for the Owls as Temple opened a 15-11 lead eight minutes into the contest. The Roadrunners responded, using a 10-2 run to open a slim 21-17 lead.

Starting with a three from Sam Hofman, Temple went on a 12-2 run of its own, capped by a layup from Settle to go up 31-27 at the 4:46 mark. The half did not end well for TU, however, as a 10-0 run for UTSA allowed the Roadrunners to take a 41-34 lead at the break.

After UTSA scored the first points of the second stanza, it was the Owls turn to go on a run, as Miller and Settle scored five each in a 10-1 spurt for Temple, tying the game at 44-44 with 16:06 to go.

In a game that was dominated to that point by runs, a 7-0 UTSA jaunt was followed by 11 in row for Temple as the Owls went up 55-51 in a span of 2:40. From there, the teams traded baskets for the first time as TU maintained the lead, but it never went past five points in the next five minutes.
