Handful Of Offensive Boards
As part of his seven rebound effort against UTSA, Sam Hofman pulled in five from the offensive glass. It is the sixth time this season a Temple player has grabbed five or more o-boards and the second for Hofman. Jahlil White has two such games and Jordan Riley has one with five offensive boards. Steve Settle III had a team-high six against La Salle.
Valuing The Ball (Part I)
Sunday against UTSA was the third game in a row and 11th overall time this season the Owls turned the ball over less than 10 times. It has given the ball away a season-low five times twice, at Drexel on November 14 and versus Charlotte on February 11. TU is fourth in the American and in the top-60 nationally at 10.5 turnovers per game.Â
Valuing The Ball (Part II)
Temple committed just 15 turnovers in two games last week. The 7.5 giveaways a game were the 26th best mark in NCAA Division I.Â
Winning The Turnover Battle
In addition to not giving the ball away, Temple is third in the AAC and in the top-65 in NCAA Division I in turnover margin at +2.2. In large part, that is due to the Owls averaging 7.6 steals per game, a jump of more than two swipes a night from last season.Â
Scouting Report
Wichita State is 11-16 with a 3-11 record in the AAC following a 79-63 win against Tulsa on Wednesday. It snapped a three-game skid for the Shockers, who had not won since a victory against UTSA on February 7.
Leading the offense for Wichita State is Colby Rogers at 15.6 points per game. Xavier Bell and Harlond Beverly are also in double figures, netting 11.9 and 10.3 an outing, respectively. Dalen Ridgnal and Kenny Pohto form a strong rebounding tandem, combining for 12.4 a night. Beverly has 82 assists.Â
Keeping opponents off the free throw line and rebounding have been important factors for the Shockers this season. WSU is 42nd nationally, committing just 15.1 fouls per game and teams are attempting 16.3 shots a contest from the charity stripe. Wichita State is also among the top teams in NCAA Division I at 39.3 rebounds a game.Â
For as much as they keep opponents off the line, the Shockers don't go there much themselves, ranking below 295th nationally in both free throw attempts (16.6) and makes (11.6) per game.Â
The team's offensive numbers have also dropped since the start of conference play. WSU averaged 75.3 points per game against non-conference foes compared to 69.6 versus the AAC. Turnovers have played a big role as WSU is giving the ball up 1.9 more times per game in conference play, contributing in part to taking 5.4 field goal attempts get game less in American competition.Â
Paul Mills is in his first season as the head coach of the Shockers. Prior to coming to the Sunflower State, he spent six seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts where he went 106-84, including a 30-5 mark last season, two trips to the NCAA Tournament and a Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 as a 15-seed in 2021.Â
