PHILADELPHIA — The Temple Men's Cross Country program is set to hire Riley Buchholz as its next assistant coach for men's cross country, announced Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Elvis Forde.
"His knowledge and the people he has been around has prepared him well for the transition of taking over coaching cross country at Temple," Forde said. "I'm looking forward to working with him because he brings a level of excitement and enthusiasm that we need. He's up to the task and we are all looking forward to working with him and taking our men's program to the next level."
Buchholz added: "I am thrilled to be named the assistant coach for Men's Cross Country here at Temple University. I would like to thank Elvis Forde, Lee Roberts, and the entire athletic department and hiring committee for this opportunity. Working with such an amazing staff is truly humbling and I cannot wait to build a program that welcomes and challenges runners who want to compete and grow as student athletes. Temple Athletics has a strong foundation that fosters competition and excellence, and I am honored to be a part of this community."
Buchholz comes to Temple with an impressive resume as an athlete and a budding career in coaching. The former Tennessee cross country and track & field athlete competed for the Volunteers from 2019-23. Buchholz placed 37th in the SEC Cross Country Championships in 2020 and helped the Volunteers place fifth at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships that same year. He set a personal record in the 10k at the 2021 NCAA South Regional, clocking in at 31:54.1 and placing 79th. Buchholz was honored as a 2020 All-SEC Freshman in cross country and First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll for the 2019-20 season.
Following his collegiate athletics career, Buchholz served as an assistant with Tennessee's Strength and Conditioning program. He also served as a volunteer coach for most of 2023, assisting Tennessee Head Coach and Director of Cross Country/Distance Sean Carlson.
Buchholz is a current member of USATF and the Philadelphia Runner Track Club. He competed in the 2023 Penn Relays 5k and won the event with a new course record, before placing 56th at Club Nationals that same year.
A native of Beavercreek, Ohio, Buchholz earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Tennessee, where he majored in Kinesiology.
