Lacrosse Comes Back to Defeat Vanderbilt in AAC Opener
3.16.24 | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Belle Mastropietro and Julie Schickling combined for seven goals to lead Temple to a 10-8 over Vanderbilt in the American Athletic Conference opener. The Owls had to rally from an early 4-0 deficit, scoring 10 times over the final three quarters to secure the win.
Mastropietro finished with a game high six points on four goals and two assists and added seven draw controls. Schickling added a hat trick of her own, Amelia Wright scored twice, and Mackenzie Roth had three assists.
How it Happened
> Vanderbilt scored first just prior to the halfway point of the opening quarter. The Commodores added three more before the end of the period and held Temple scoreless in the meantime.
> Mastropietro scored the Owls' first two goals on a pair of nearly identical free-position attempts to start the second. She added another in the quarter and was joined in the scoring column by Wright and Schickling, but a pair of Vandy goals kept them ahead by one at halftime.
> The Owls won a defensive battle in the third, taking the lead thanks to back-to-back goals from Wright and Mastropietro. The Temple defense held Vanderbilt scoreless in the quarter, part of a longer run of nearly 26 minutes between Commodore goals.
> Schickling's second and third goals helped keep Temple out in front in the fourth. The Owls held a 9-8 lead in the late stages, with Erin King putting on the finishing touches with her third goal of the season at the 2:34 mark.
Game Notes
> Mastropietro posted her second consecutive four goal game and third consecutive hat trick. She's totaled 15 points in the last three games and leads the Owls in goals and assists.
> Mackenzie Roth's three assists were one shy of a season high. She is now at 86 for her career, three away from Temple's all-time record.
> Katie Shallow had five caused turnovers for the fifth time this season. She leads the American with 35 total CT's and ranks top ten nationally in the category.
> Temple's defense held Vanderbilt to nine shots and forced 18 turnovers over the final 45 minutes of play. The Commodores finished with just 13 shots on goal, including only three in the second half and none in the third quarter.
