PHILADELPHIA - Temple fencer Margherita Calderaro concluded her final season and stellar Temple career by earning College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American At-Large Third Team honors.

"For me this is an honor to be awarded this accolade. I believe it is a testament to the hard work that I together with everyone who supported me throughout my five years at Temple put towards both my sport and education," expressed Calderaro. I'm lucky to have been on a team full of bright and talented individuals who have pushed me every day to be the best version of myself. Although I might be the first, I am confident that I will not be the last and I look forward to seeing many other Temple fencers and athletes receiving this honor.

Temple Head Coach Jennie Salmon noted Calderaro's dedication and passion to her craft on and off the strip.

"For Marghe to be recognized as a CSC Academic All American is an amazing accomplishment and well deserved.  Throughout her time at Temple she excelled in all her academic pursuits with determination, curiosity, purpose and passion.  This same formula led her to incredible success as a Temple fencer.  Her career as an Owl included the highest NCAA finish of an epeeist in program history. Marghe's leadership in the classroom, training room and as a competitor will inspire our program for years to come.  We are so proud of her."

The Rome, Italy native became first fencer in Owls' program history to earn the distinction, marking the 30th overall in school history.  While competing with six other sports in the At-Large program, Calderaro's achievement marks the third overall in school history.

In 2024, the epeeist earned a squad best 51 wins and helped the Owls fencing program to its 28th straight NIWFA Team Championship, while individually earning her third straight epee championship.

Calderaro is one of the most decorated Temple fencers in school history on and off the strip. The Rome, Italy native earned over 200 wins throughout her five-year Owls' career. In all, Calderaro is a four-time NCAA Regional qualifier, an NCAA Championship qualifier, a three-time USFCA All-Region, a USFCA All-American, and a NCAA All-American. Scholastically, the graduate student holds a 4.0 cumulative grade point average while completing a neuroscience graduate degree. Calderaro earned USFCA Scholar of Distinction honors on three occasions, 2023 College Sports Communicators All-District, the 2023 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award, and the 2023 American Athletic Conference Sport Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

CSC's (formerly CoSida) Academic All-America program began in 1952 and currently sponsors programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country, men's and women's tennis as well as student-athletes who compete in other sports through the At-Large program.  Among the criteria for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
