Owls Win Another Thriller at Home

1.11.25 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's basketball (10-6, 4-1 AAC) defeated Tulsa (8-9, 2-3 AAC) 73-71 Saturday afternoon at The Liacouras Center. Leading scorer Tarriyonna Gary had 21 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Jaleesa Molina had her third double-double of the season, 11 points and 10 rebounds. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

  • Tiarra East earned the first bucket for the Owls following a miss from the Golden Hurricane at the 9:23 mark. 
  • Tulsa and Temple followed with back-to-back buckets following a pull-up jumper from Tulsa's Crawford and Kaylah Turner, Temple leading by two, 8-6 score.
  • Out of the media timeout, Tarrioynna Gary grabbed her second steal of the game.
  • Tusla went on a 6-0 run, gaining the lead 16-12 with under five minutes to play. Gary responded with a three, cutting into Tulsa's lead. 
  • The Owls closed out the quarter trailing by two, 19-17, with seven points from East.

Second Quarter

  • To open the second quarter, Turner nailed a three-point basket at the top of the key and a steal and a layup on the next possession, giving Temple a one-point advantage, 22-21, with 8:52 remaining in the quarter. 
  • Temple forced Tulsa to three turnovers early in the second quarter, capitalizing by scoring six points.
  • A 14-5 run in the middle of the quarter, gave Temple a 36-26 advantage by the 4:21 mark. Out of the media timeout, Turner scored a corner three and reached double figures (13 points) halfway through the second quarter.
  • Tulsa used a 7-2 run to cut Temple's lead in half, 38-33, by the 3:11 mark.
  • Anissa Rivera drew a foul draining both free throws, at the 2:13 mark. 
  • Jaleesa Molina made the last bucket of the half, Temple led 45-35.
  • Turner scored 11 of Temple's 28 points in the second quarter.

Third Quarter

  • Tulsa's Ellis Hill scored the first basket of the second half, with 8:08 remaining in the period 45-37.
  • After being in a scoring drought for over three minutes, Temple went on an 11-0 run [Gary (6) Amaya Oliver (2), and Savannah Curry (3)]. Gary drilled her third and fourth three of the game, extending Temple's lead to 17, 56-39 with 5:21 remaining. 
  • Tusla ended a four-minute scoring drought with a 7-0 run, they trail by 10, 56-46,  with 2:17 in the period. 
  • Gary ended Tulsa's run with a jumper and three, the Owls ended the quarter with a 15-point advantage over the Golden Hurricane, 61-46.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Golden Hurricane Hadley Periman scored the first points, thirty seconds into the fourth quarter. Tulsa went on an 11-0 run, cutting its deficit to four, 61-57, with 6:48 remaining. 
  • After being scoreless for almost five minutes, Gary drove to the basket and drew a foul, sinking both free throws, Temple's led 63-57 with 5:12 in the period.
  • Gary had a steal and an assist to Molina, extending Temple's lead to 10, 67-57 with under four minutes to play. 
  • Tusla went on a 8-0 run to bring Tulsa within two, 67-65, at the 1:34 mark.
  • Out of Tulsa's timeout at 1:19, Turner made a two-point jumper, and Taylor followed with a steal that led to a Molina layup, giving the Owls a six-point lead, 71-65, with 32.7 left in the quarter. That bucket gave Molina a double-double for the game.
  • Tulsa's Jade Clack scored a three, making it a three-point game, 71-68, with under 20 seconds remaining. 
  • Temple failed to get the inbound pass in five seconds, giving the ball to Tulsa. With 8.2 seconds remaining, Tulsa called a timeout. Crawford knocked down a corner three to tie the game at 71-71 with 5.2 remaining.
  • Oliver grabbed a rebound and scored the game-winning basket to secure the win for Temple, 73-71.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Temple had seven second-chance points in the first quarter. 
  • Tusla didn't take a trip to the line in the first quarter and only had three free throw attempts in the second quarter. 
  • Temple forced Tulsa into 10 turnovers, which is the eighth game in a row Temple has forced double-digit turnovers in the first half.
  • Temple's 28 points in the second quarter is the second most points in a quarter this season. 
  • Temple outrebounded Tulsa 23-15 with 13 defensive rebounds in the first half.
  • In the third quarter, the Owls shot 47% (4-7) from three. 
  • Temple shot 92.3% (12-13) from free throws. 
  • Temple scored a season-low 10 points in the fourth quarter.
