Owls Dominate Charlotte to Extend Winning Streak

1.18.25 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball (11-6, 5-1 AAC) beats Charlotte (5-12, 0-6 AAC) 80-62 Saturday afternoon at the Liacouras Center in front of 1,490 fans. Temple had three starters in double figures: Tarriyonna Gary (18), Jaleesa Molina (15), and Tristen Taylor (11).

Molina had her fourth double-double of the season with 15 points (shooting 5-5 from the field) and 11 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

  • Charlotte scored the first basket with a layup from Jordan Peete with 9:15 remaining in the period.
  • Jaleesa Molina drew a foul and made one of two free throws, scoring Temple's first points. Molina started an 8-0 run by Temple with points from Amaya Oliver (2), Tarriyonna Gary (3), and Tiarra East (2). Temple led 8-4 with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Gary connected with East after a steal for a layup, extending Temple's lead to 8, 12-4.
  • Prior to the media timeout, Charlotte made its last two baskets, cutting the Owls' lead to four, 12-8, with just under five minutes to play.
  • Out of the media timeout, Temple forced Charlotte into a turnover on its first possession. Temple then made six consecutive field goals, including seven points from Molina after the media timeout.
  • Anissa Rivera rejected Hayleigh Breland, resulting in a layup by Oliver, extending Temple's lead to 13, 25-12, with 54 seconds remaining in the first quarter. That ended the scoring in the quarter.

Second Quarter

  • To start the second quarter, the 49ers scored the first basket 20 seconds into the period.
  • Kaylah Turner made a jumper, scoring the Owls' first basket of the second quarter. The Owls led 27-14 with 8:07 remaining in the first half.
  • Tristen Taylor scored her first basket of the game and drew a foul, resulting in a three-point play, giving the Owls a 12-point advantage, 30-18.
  • Molina reached double figures (10), shooting 3-3 from the field and 4-5 from free throws with 5:35 remaining in the half.
  • Charlotte went through a scoring drought lasting over three minutes, going 0-6, entering the media timeout at the 4:31 mark.
  • Out of the media timeout, Taylor scored a jumper off a fast break after Temple forced Charlotte into its 11th turnover of the first half.
  • The Owls went on an 8-0 run lasting over two minutes as Temple hit 4-5 from the floor.
  • To close out the first half, Turner made both free throws. Temple had a 17-point advantage, leading 44-27 at halftime.

Third Quarter

  • Both teams exchanged missed baskets before Charlotte scored the first points of the second half, getting one to fall with 9:26 remaining.
  • Gary reached double figures (11) and scored Temple's first points with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter. However, an 11-2 run by Charlotte made the score 46-38 by the 5:44 mark.
  • Temple went on a 6-0 run with points from Taylor (4) and Turner (2), extending its lead to double digits, 52-38, before the 4:18 media timeout.
  • Coming out of the media timeout, Charlotte's scoring drought lasted over two minutes until a Temple foul from Gary ended it, making it a 52-40 game.
  • Temple scored on five of its final six possessions of the quarter—Savannah Curry (2), Rivera (3), Oliver (2), and Gary (1)—extending Temple's lead to 60-44 by the end of the period.

Fourth Quarter

  • Charlotte's leading scorer, Madison Roshelle, scored the first basket of the final quarter, making it 60-46 with 9:24 remaining.
  • Taylor reached double figures (11) after a layup extended Temple's lead to 16, 68-52, with 5:07 in the period.
  • Temple led by 15+ for the remainder of the game and pushed the lead up to 20—the highest in the game—in the final minute. The game ended 80-62.
