Owls Suffer First Conference Loss at Home to Tulane

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball (12-7, 6-2 AAC) drops to Tulane (12-7, 5-3 AAC), 62-60, Saturday afternoon at The Liacouras Center in front of 1,435 fans. Leading scorer Tarriyonna Gary had 23 points, shooting 7-12 from the field. This is Gary's third consecutive game scoring double figures. Gary also led the team in rebounds with eight.
Tiarra East is one of 12 players in Temple's history to have 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Tulane scored the first points to start the game with a layup from Amira Mabry. Temple responded with a layup of its own by Tiarra East, tying the game 2-2 at the 8:15 mark.
- After hitting two of its first three field goals, Temple went 0-14 before Kaylah Turner made a layup with 30 seconds remaining in the period. During that time, Tulane built a lead of up to seven points.
- Turner's bucket was the last shot in the quarter, and Tulane led 14-9.
Second Quarter
- Savannah Curry scored for the Owls to start the second quarter, off a turnover forced by Anissa Rivera. Temple trailed 14-11 with 9:24 remaining.
- Turner and Curry hit back-to-back threes, cutting into Tulane's lead, 18-17, with 7:45 in the period.
- Tulane went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to seven, 24-17, before the 4:38 media timeout. Heading into the timeout, Temple went 0-4 from the floor and had a scoring drought lasting over three minutes.
- Out of the media timeout, Temple went on a 6-0 run with two points each from Tarriyonna Gary, Tiarra East, and Jaleesa Molina. Temple trailed by one, 24-23, with 2:47 remaining.
- Gary reached double figures after nailing a corner three, but Tulane scored seven of the period's final 10 points and led at the half, 31-26.
Third Quarter
- To open the second half, Molina grabbed a steal and drew a foul, nailing both free throws, 31-28, 14 seconds into the third quarter.
- Gary drilled a three, tying the game 33-33 with 7:29 remaining. On the next possession, Rivera made a pull-up jumper, giving Temple its first lead since a 5-4 score in the first quarter, 35-33, with 6:33 in the period.
- Temple hit four of its last five possessions; however, Tulane kept pace heading into the media timeout. Temple held a two-point advantage, 39-37.
- Both teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the period. The lone difference was a three from Whittington that put Tulane ahead by three points. The quarter ended 48-45, Tulane.
Fourth Quarter
- Tulane opened the final quarter with a jumper from Sneed, 50-45, with 9:32 remaining in the period.
- A 6-2 run by Temple pulled the Owls within one, 52-51, by the 6:54 mark.
- Turner reached double figures (10) with a three, tying the game 54-54 with 5:41 remaining.
- Gary responded to a 4-0 Tulane run by nailing two threes and giving Temple a 60-58 advantage.
- Tulane scored on a jumper, 62-60, with 29.0 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.
- Temple called a timeout at 16.9 seconds. After the inbound, the Owls missed a couple of shots and fouled Tulane on the rebound. Two missed free throws gave Temple one last chance with 3.9 seconds to play. Two fouls took the clock down to 1.1 seconds. A final catch-and-shoot from East bounced off the rim, and the game ended 62-60 in favor of Tulane.
- Gary led the Owls with 13 points in the second half.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Tulane scored 24 of its 31 points in the paint in the first half.
- Temple forced Tulane into 10 turnovers in the first half. This marks the 11th game in a row that Temple has forced its opponents into double-digit turnovers in the first half.
- Temple shot 29.4% in the first half, shooting 10-34 from the floor and 4-10 from behind the arc.
- Tulane had 38 points in the paint, while Temple had 20 points.
- Temple outrebounded Tulane 35-31, including 16 offensive rebounds.
