Owls Suffers Tough Road Loss at North Texas

DENTON, TEXAS – Temple women's basketball (12-8, 6-3 AAC) fell to North Texas (16-5, 8-1 AAC) 70-67 at The Super Pit Wednesday evening. Leading scorer Anissa Rivera had 16 points, shooting 6-11 from the field and 4-8 from three. Rivera also had five rebounds, two steals, and one block.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

  • Temple opened the game by scoring on its first four possessions, leading 9-0 with 6:57 left in the quarter.
  • After going 0-5 from the field, UNT earned its first points on foul shots at 6:07, with Temple ahead 9-2.
  • Out of the media timeout, Tarriyonna Gary nailed a corner three, extending Temple's lead to double digits, 14-4, with 4:36 remaining.
  • Anissa Rivera grabbed a loose ball and then made Temple's second three of the game. Temple led 19-8 with just under two minutes to play.
  • Tristen Taylor scored the last basket to close out the quarter, 21-11. Taylor and Gary led all scorers with six points.

Second Quarter

  • Gary reached double figures (10) and scored the first four points for the Owls to start the second quarter with two baseline jumpers, 25-13, with 6:25 left in the period.
  • Gary started Temple's 7-0 run, giving the Owls a 17-point lead, 30-13, at the 5:22 mark.
  • North Texas ended a two-minute scoring drought with a layup and steal by Hardaway.
  • Rivera reached double figures (11) after drilling two back-to-back threes. Rivera was 3-4 from beyond the arc in her first seven minutes of playing time.
  • The Mean Green made five of their last six field goals, going on a 9-0 run, cutting into the Owls' lead, 38-28, with 1:03 remaining in the quarter.
  • Savannah Curry ended North Texas' run with a three, and the Owls led 41-28 after the first half.

Third Quarter

  • North Texas' leading scorer Tommisha Lampkin opened the second half scoring, 41-30, with 9:12 remaining.
  • The Mean Green cut the lead to nine, 46-37, at 5:40 in the period. Gary immediately responded with a three before the 4:59 media timeout. Temple led 49-37.
  • North Texas made three consecutive field goals, cutting the deficit to nine, 55-46, to end the period.

Fourth Quarter

  • The Mean Green made a three to open the fourth quarter, 55-49, 18 seconds into the period.
  • Taylor reached double figures (11) after converting on a three-point play, 61-51, with 8:08 to play in the fourth.
  • North Texas went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to three, 63-60. Rivera responded with a three, and UNT matched that three before the 4:50 media timeout, 66-63.
  • At the 2:37 mark, UNT tied the game at 67-67, and took its first lead of the game 24 seconds later, 69-67.
  • That score held until the 48.6 mark and an official's timeout. UNT made one free throw with 12.0 on the clock.
  • UNT held a 10-1 advantage down the stretch. Temple was 0-12 from the field from the 5:34 mark on.
  • The Owls had a chance to tie the game, but a missed three-point attempt as the clock ran out ended the game 70-67.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Temple opened the game shooting 47% (9-19) from the field in the first quarter. North Texas shot 22% (4-18).
  • Tarriyonna Gary (10 points) and Anissa Rivera (11 points) combined for 21 points in the first half. Gary went 4-4 from the floor, while Rivera went 4-5 from the floor and 3-4 from three.
  • North Texas converted its nine offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.
  • The Owls shot 6-17 from the field in the third quarter, shooting just 35%, while UNT went 8-15 from the floor, shooting 53%.
  • In the fourth quarter, Temple shot 4-16, with a field goal percentage of 25%, while UNT shot 8-13, with a field goal percentage of 61%.
  • Temple was outrebounded 36-43 by North Texas.
  • The Owls were outscored 26-42 in the second half by North Texas.
  • In the second half, Temple went 2-10 from behind the arc after starting out 6-12 from beyond the arc.

The Owls continue their road trip in Texas and head to San Antonio to play the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 3:00 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+.
