Owls Suffer Road Loss to UTSA

2.1.25 | Women's Basketball

SAN ANTONIO – Temple women's basketball (12-8, 6-3 AAC) fell to UTSA (17-3, 8-1 AAC), 70-61, on Saturday, February 1st, at the Convocation Center. Leading scorer Tiarra East had 18 points, shooting 7-13 from the field.


HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

  • Jaleesa Molina scored the Owls' first rebounds and points after making a jumper to start the game, 2-0, 22 seconds into the quarter.
  • The Roadrunners responded with two baskets of their own, giving them an early two-point lead, 4-2, with 8:43 remaining.
  • Out of the 4:58 media timeout, Tarriyonna Gary scored the last four points for the Owls, giving them a three-point lead, 9-6, with 3:42 left in the period.
  • The Owls went on an 8-0 run, scoring on four consecutive possessions, 17-8, with 1:51 remaining.
  • The Roadrunners closed the quarter, scoring five unanswered points, leaving Temple with a 17-13 lead.

Second Quarter

  • Tiarra East scored a jumper, marking the Owls' first points in the second quarter.
  • On the next possession, Gary, now in double figures (13), got the Owls' seventh forced turnover, scoring a fast-break three, extending Temple's lead to nine, 22-13, at the 8:43 mark.
  • Temple's lead peaked at 12 at the 7:37 mark, 27-15. Both teams went dry from the field over the next two minutes, exchanging free throws to move the score to 29-19.
  • After being in a scoring drought for over three minutes, Anissa Rivera converted on a three-point play, 32-24, with 4:11 left in the period.
  • Both teams struggled to find a basket, being in a drought for almost three minutes.
  • Kaylah Turner extended Temple's lead to double digits with a layup, 34-24, with just over one minute left in the first half.
  • Savannah Curry closed out the quarter by making both free throws, giving Temple a 12-point advantage at the break.
  • Neither team shot well from the field in the quarter (Temple 27.8%, UTSA 25.0%), but both were perfect from the foul line (Temple 8-8, UTSA 5-5).

Third Quarter

  • Tiarra East reached double figures (11) and opened the quarter with a jumper, 38-24, 40 seconds into the quarter.
  • UTSA went on a 5-0 run before East scored her first three of the game, 41-29, at the 8:02 mark.
  • The Roadrunners scored on their first four possessions, trimming their deficit to seven, 45-38, with 5:32 remaining in the quarter.
  • East ended Temple's two-minute scoring drought, 47-40, with 3:36 left in the period.
  • Temple went on a 6-2 run to close the period with a nine-point Owls' advantage, 51-42.

Fourth Quarter

  • Curry grabbed a steal to start the fourth quarter, and Taylor capitalized by scoring a jumper, extending Temple's lead to 11, 53-42, with 9:34 to play.
  • Eleven unanswered points by UTSA tied the game, 53-53, forcing Temple to take a timeout at 5:57.
  • Heading into the media timeout, Temple went 0-5 and had a scoring drought lasting over three minutes. Taylor responded with a three out of the 5:57 media timeout, 56-53.
  • A desperation three as the shot clock expired tied the game for UTSA.
  • After Molina broke the tie with a foul shot, Gary nailed a three to give Temple a 60-56 lead at the 3:01 mark.
  • By the 2:25 mark, the Roadrunners hit a field goal and two foul shots to tie the game at 60-60.
  • A pair of successful foul shots by UTSA gave them their first lead of the second half, 62-60. Gary split a pair of foul shots to cut it to 62-61.
  • UTSA hit a jumper from the paint and then stole the inbound pass for another bucket, 66-61, with 45 seconds remaining.
  • A Temple turnover at 31.6 seconds led to a Roadrunners' timeout.
  • Four UTSA free throws to close out the game resulted in a 70-61 defeat for the Owls.

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Gary had 13 points in the first half, making it the third straight game Gary has had double-digit points in the first half.
  • The Roadrunners did not score any points in the last four minutes of the first half.
  • Temple recorded nine steals in the first half, leading to 13 UTSA turnovers and resulting in 10 points off those turnovers.
  • East had 9 points in the third quarter and went 4-6 from the field.
  • The Owls went 3-15 from the field in the fourth quarter. Temple was outscored 27-10 by UTSA in the fourth quarter.
  • In the second half, Temple was outscored 25-46 by UTSA. The Owls shot 10-31 from the floor while going 3-11 in the second from three.
  • UTSA went 15-20 from the free-throw line in the second half, while the Owls went 2-5.
  • After 13 points in the first half, Tarriyonna Gary scored 4 points and went 1-5 from the field.
  • Temple was outrebounded 34-47 by UTSA.
