The Owls Secure a Win Over Memphis

2.5.25 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's basketball (13-9, 7-4 AAC) took down Memphis (5-12, 3-7 AAC), 74-66, in front of 3,496 fans Wednesday morning at the Liacouras Center. Four Owls reached double figures: Tarriyonna Gary (10), Jaleesa Molina (12), Anissa Rivera (12), and Kaylah Turner (12).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

  • Amaya Oliver scored the first basket for the Owls with a layup assisted by Tristen Taylor one minute into play.
  • The Owls forced back-to-back Memphis turnovers to start the game. Before the five-minute media timeout, four of Temple's six points came off turnovers.
  • Heading into the media timeout, Memphis had a scoring drought lasting over two minutes, while the Owls had a 6-2 lead.
  • Memphis' Tanyuel Welch scored a three following the media timeout, and Tarriyonna Gary responded with a three of her own. Temple led 8-5 with 4:33 remaining.
  • Over the next two minutes, Temple went on a 10-0 run, with points from Gary (5), Molina (2), and Rivera (3), extending Temple's lead to 11, 16-5, with 1:49 left in the period.
  • While Temple was on its 10-0 run, Memphis went 1-7 from the field and had another scoring drought lasting over two minutes.
  • Temple ended the quarter on a 14-4 run while hitting 5-7 from the field, securing a 20-9 lead.

Second Quarter

  • Gary reached double figures (10) and nailed the team's third three to open the second quarter. Temple led 23-9 at the 8:27 mark.
  • After Temple pushed the lead to 16 (25-9), its scoring streak was snapped by a 6-0 run from Memphis, started with a three-pointer by Deedee Hagemann, followed by another three from Tilly Boler.
  • Both teams traded scores, with Temple continuing its dominance from behind the arc, in the mid-range, and from the line, maintaining their double-digit lead (32-19).
  • After being in a scoring drought for almost three minutes, Rivera drew a foul and converted on a three-point play, 35-21, with 1:43 to play.
  • With 25 seconds left in the half, East scored a layup on a breakaway to end the scoring for the half, 37-23.

Third Quarter

  • Taylor converted on a three-point play to open the second half, 40-23, 40 seconds into the quarter, giving Temple its largest lead of the game.
  • After a low-scoring start to the half, the Owls called a timeout to reset after 2:35 minutes.
  • Memphis went on a 5-0 run after Temple's back-to-back turnovers, 42-31 at the 6:21 mark. That run was halted by a Felicia Jacobs tip-in.
  • The Tigers outscored the Owls 6-4, scoring on their last three possessions by three different players before a media timeout was called with 2:07 left in the quarter.
  • Coming out of the media timeout hot, Memphis grabbed eight points to Temple's two before Amaya Oliver was able to convert a layup with 28 seconds left in the quarter.
  • The quarter ended with Temple holding onto a six-point lead, 54-48.

Fourth Quarter

  • Temple reclaimed its double-digit lead with a jumper from Kaylah Turner, 58-48.
  • Memphis went scoreless for the first three minutes of the quarter before its first bucket – a three from Boler.
  • After a three-minute scoring drought, Savannah Curry made a tip-in before the 4:39 media timeout, 60-53.
  • The Tigers clawed away at the Owls' lead until they brought it within four points for the first time since the third minute of the game.
  • Consecutive baskets by Molina, Turner, and Rivera pushed the lead back to 10 points, 66-56, with 1:47 remaining.
  • After four straight points by the Tigers, Memphis fouled Turner, who made both shots. Temple held a 68-60 advantage with 59 seconds remaining.
  • The teams continued trading trips to the foul line. Memphis added one, Temple added two. In between, Boler drilled a three to make it a 70-64 game with 51 seconds on the clock.
  • Boler pulled Memphis within four with a jumper at the 0:15 mark.
