PHILADELPHIA – Temple volleyball (11-8, 1-4 American) fell to East Carolina (10-6, 2-3 American) in a five-set battle during Temple's School Day Game at McGonigle Hall. The Owls were led by Leia Harper, who recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (Temple 25, ECU 15)
Temple's 6-1 scoring run gave the Owls a five-point lead, 13-8, with three of those points coming from Olivia Hummel, who also notched two aces during the stretch.
An ace from Lexi Yoza followed by a kill from Harper kept the Owls ahead by five, 20-15.
Steel Sinai added a solo block to extend the lead to 23-15, and Harper sealed the set with a kill, 25-15.
SET 2 (Temple 12, ECU 25)
Looking to respond after falling behind early, Hummel's kill ended the Pirates' 7-1 run to cut into their lead, 12-6.
ECU continued to control the set, taking it 25-12.
SET 3 (Temple 28, ECU 26)
Back-to-back kills from Alyssa Finister gave the Owls a 6-4 edge.
Harper recorded her tenth kill of the match to spark a 3-0 Temple run, forcing an ECU timeout with the Owls up 11-8.
The Pirates answered with a 5-0 run to take their first lead, 13-12.
Set three featured 12 ties and eight lead changes before Finister delivered the decisive kill to give Temple the set, 28-26.
SET 4 (Temple 22, ECU 25)
The Owls opened the frame on a 4-0 run led by Hummel and Finister.
Both teams exchanged points staying within three points of one another.
ECU responded late with a 3-0 spurt to close out the set, 25-22.
SET 5 (Temple 13, ECU 15)
A kill and block from Greene tied the final set at 2-2.
Back-to-back blocks by Hummel trimmed the Pirates' lead to 12-11, but ECU held on to take the last set, 15-13.
