Owls Show Grit in 4-2 Loss to Memphis

10.18.25 | Men's Soccer

MEMPHIS – The Temple men's soccer team lost to Memphis, 4-2, on a windy Saturday afternoon. They will now head back home to face the University of South Florida on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Memphis came out aggressively to start the game, as they looked to test goalkeeper Preston Neal from every angle. While he was able to make some remarkable saves, the Tigers eventually would break through after Miller Lashlee scored from inside the box off his left foot in the 20th minute. Less than two minutes later, Lashlee would find the back of the net again after Neal made the initial save. Putting the Tigers up, 2-0.
  • Temple kept on pressing forward, and their constant pressure led to a breakdown defensively by Memphis in the 35th minute, which allowed Nathan Brown to easily send a pass forward to a wide-open Chase Jackson for his first collegiate goal—cutting the Tigers' lead in half, 2-1, which is what the scoreboard would display as both teams went back to their locker rooms for halftime.
  • Temple kept applying pressure and was eventually rewarded with a penalty kick in the 67th minute. Stepping up to take it was Lukas Egarter, who placed it perfectly in the top left of the net. Making it a 2-2 game with just over 20 minutes remaining in the match.
  • Memphis gained some momentum in the final ten minutes of the game as they would be given a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. Saad Chaouki would convert to regain the lead for Memphis, 3-2. The goal gave more life to the Tigers squad as just two minutes later, it was once again Chaouki sneaking a low shot past traffic and into the back of the net. Giving the Tigers their second two-goal lead of the contest.
  • Despite having four shots on goal and four corner kicks, Temple was unable to capitalize and ultimately fell to Memphis, 4-2. Both teams combined for 29 fouls and seven yellow cards, five of which were against Temple.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • It is the first time since Oct. 15, 2024, that the Owls scored two goals in a game (2-0 vs. Mercyhurst).
  • Both Rocco Haeufgloeckner and Lukas Egarter led the Owls this afternoon with two shots apiece.
  • Goalkeeper Preston Neal finished the afternoon with four saves. This is his third-straight start, and he has compiled 20 saves over those three matches.
  • Only Nore Sumner and Luka Lukic played the entire 90 minutes. Both players also received a yellow card during the physical conference matchup.
  • Temple finished the match with seven shots, and Memphis had 17. The Tigers' goalkeeper, Filip Sabatti, only had one save this afternoon.
