Temple Pushes No. 7 Liberty to the Limit in Heart-Wrenching Shootout Loss

10.24.25 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – Tied 2-2 at the end of double overtime, the Temple University field hockey team could not prevail in a shootout, falling 3-2 (3-1 SO) to No. 7 Liberty on Friday evening at Howarth Field.

The Owls (10-6, 2-5 BE) will look to bounce back on Sunday against Yale on Senior Day. The Flames (13-2, 6-0 BE) will face Longwood in their nonconference finale.

How It Happened

Liberty opened the scoring in the first quarter when Paris-Gail Isaacs found Zoe Gaillard in space, and Gaillard fired a shot into the cage with 5:59 remaining in the period.

A few minutes later, freshman Lucia Magro buried a penalty stroke for her sixth goal of the season, evening the game at 1-1 with 3:32 left in the first quarter.

The Flames regained the lead before halftime on a penalty corner. Temple goalkeeper Alex Lepore made the initial save, but Dara Semmartin found Josefina Tomasi, who capitalized to make it 2-1 with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter.

After a scoreless third quarter, Temple found an equalizer early in the fourth. Mara Lenting inserted a corner to Marsha Ariesen, who dished to Magro. Magro's shot deflected off a Liberty defender and into the back of the cage to tie it 2-2.

Temple dominated possession late, outshooting Liberty 16-0 across the third, fourth and first overtime periods. The Owls then withstood six Liberty shots in the second overtime to force a shootout.

In the shootout, Lenting converted the opening attempt before Liberty answered. The Flames took a 2-1 edge in the second round, and both teams came up empty in the third and fourth rounds. Julieta Tornati clinched the victory for Liberty with a successful attempt to start the fifth round.

Behind the Numbers

Temple held decisive advantages in shots (25-13) and shots on goal (14-10) while not allowing a single attempt in the third, fourth or first overtime periods. The Owls also led 14-10 in penalty corners.

Lepore finished with eight saves, while Liberty's Diane Saint Martin made 12 stops.

The contest marked Temple's first shootout since a 2-1 win over Providence on Oct. 7, 2022.

Up Next

Temple will honor seniors Halle Aschenbach, Lina Neilson, Isabella Ospitale, Peyton Rieger and Agustina Tucceri prior to its Senior Day matchup against Yale on Sunday at noon at Howarth Field.
