Owls Top No. 14 Yale, 2-1, on Senior Day

10.26.25 | Field Hockey

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple University field hockey team honored its seniors in style Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 14 Yale, 2-1, at Howarth Field.

The Owls (11-6) will look to carry momentum into their season finale at Providence next Friday. The Bulldogs (12-3) saw their six-game winning streak snapped and will close the regular season Friday against No. 4 Harvard.

Temple scored twice in the second quarter to build a 2-0 lead before Yale pulled within one late in the third frame. The Owls' defense held strong in the fourth quarter to secure their 11th win of the season.

Prior to the game, Temple honored seniors Halle Aschenbach, Lina Neilson, Isabella Ospitale, Peyton Rieger and Agustina Tucceri in their final home appearance. The five seniors helped Temple compile a 47-28 record over the past four seasons, becoming the first senior class since 1994 to record at least 10 wins in all four years as Owls.

Off the field, the group has also excelled academically — earning BIG EAST All-Academic honors, recognition from the NFHCA and College Sports Communicators, and helping Temple achieve a perfect Academic Progress Rate from the NCAA.

How It Happened

After a scoreless first quarter, Temple broke through early in the second. Lonneke Kerkhof fired a shot off the pads of the Yale goalkeeper, and Rieger cleaned up the rebound to give the Owls a 1-0 lead with 13:17 remaining in the half.

Temple doubled its advantage with 6:08 left in the second quarter. Off a penalty corner, Mara Lenting inserted to Marsha Ariesen, who connected with Lucia Magro. Magro sent a backward pass to Mathéa Lassalle, who fed Ariesen for her first goal of the 2025 season.

Yale got on the board just before the third-quarter horn, as Hettie Whittington fired a shot from outside the circle that was redirected into the cage by Chiara Picciafuoco.

Temple's defense held firm in the final period, closing its 2025 home slate with a win over a nationally ranked opponent.

Behind the Numbers

Both teams tallied eight shots, with Yale putting six on target to Temple's five. The Owls held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.

Rieger's goal was her ninth of the season, moving her into a tie for second in the BIG EAST in goals and sole possession of second in points (25).

Ariesen's tally marked her first goal of the season and the third of her career, bringing her to 12 career points.

Ospitale earned the win in goal on Senior Day, making four saves to improve to 1-1 on the season.
